About the role
The role involves working under supervision to learn and supervise inmates at the County Detention Facility, maintaining security, and performing dispatching duties. It includes overseeing inmates during leisure time activities and on work details, checking work areas, ensuring facilities are kept sanitary, conducting block checks, performing searches, maintaining discipline, opening and censoring incoming mail, updating records, responding to inquiries, and providing on-the-job training.
Responsibilities
- Supervise inmates in the County Detention Facility
- Oversee inmates during leisure time activities and on work details
- Check work areas to ensure inmates are working on assigned projects
- Ensure facilities, cells, and grounds are kept sanitary
- Conduct periodic block checks
- Perform searches of inmates and search cells and other areas for contraband
- Maintain discipline among inmates
- Open and censor incoming mail
- Maintain and update Detention Facility records
- Respond to inquiries regarding inmate detention and Detention Facility policies within constraints of Department regulations
- Receive and book inmates
- Perform fingerprinting and take photographs
- Assign prisoners to cells according to the Facility classification plan
- Release prisoners on proper authorization, returning personal property and clothing
- Testify in court and before disciplinary boards
- Deliver pre-packaged medications, according to specific instructions
- Learn methods and procedures and investigate incidents and violations of rules at the Facility for disciplinary reports and possible citation or arrest
- Collect and secure evidence
- Transport inmates to and from court, medical appointments, and other institutions
- Serve warrants
- Operate a centralized control system controlling access and movement in the Facility
- Answer the telephone, receive and classify calls
- Determine priority of response and dispatch appropriate Emergency Medical and other Public Safety units, according to availability, assigned geographic area, and location, to non-emergency and emergency calls
- Maintain field communications for public safety checks, and during emergencies and incidents
- Transfer emergency calls to other agencies as warranted
- Monitor various public safety radio channels, and coordinate efforts in dispatching personnel and equipment
- Maintain records/logs of calls for services, radio transmissions, and telephone messages using the computer
- Enter and clear information on the California Law Enforcement Telecommunications Systems (CLETS) to assist personnel with calls
- Operate the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD)
- Send, receive, and decode teletype information
- Enter and track restraining orders into local, state & national data base systems
- Coordinate interagency law enforcement communications using telephone radio and computer with emergency medical and public safety activities
- Process warrants
- Update daily dispatching logs
- Perform a wide variety of general office assistance assignments
- Operate dispatching, office equipment, and computers
- Provide information to other staff and the public
- Provide on-the-job training to new staff, observing training needs
Requirements
Completion of a Basic Jail Operations Course approved by S.T.C. within 12 months of initial employment. Completion of P.C. 832 and weapons training within 12 months of initial employment. Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate valid California Driver’s License.
