CORRECTIONAL COUNSELOR 3 - RNA QUALITY ASSURANCE - 08062026-79930

Location: Nashville, TN – Department of Correction, Davidson County

Full-time position with a monthly salary range of $4,457.00 - $5,078.00 (annually $48,684.00 - $60,936.00). A Motor Vehicle Records (MVR) screening and criminal background check are required.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and three (3) years of full-time, increasingly responsible professional social or psychological counseling work.
• Substitution of Education for Experience: Additional graduate coursework in a social or behavioral science may substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis (maximum of two years).
• Substitution of Experience for Education: Full-time social or psychological counseling experience may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis (maximum of two years, requiring at least two years of study at an accredited college or university).
• OR three (3) years of experience as a Correctional Counselor with the Tennessee Department of Correction.

Special Qualifications: A valid vehicle operator’s license may be required for some positions.

About the Role

Under general supervision, this position performs correctional counseling work of considerable difficulty and serves as the first supervisory level in the Correctional Counselor sub-series. Responsibilities include supervising staff in counseling adult and juvenile offenders, with some assignments involving program oversight without direct supervision. This role differs from Correctional Counselor 2 (non-supervisory) and Chief Correctional Counselor (full program management).

Responsibilities

• Supervises Correctional Counselor staff in counseling adult and juvenile offenders.
• Calculates and verifies sentencing information for accuracy and compliance with judgment orders.
• Completes classification, reclassification, and risk-needs assessments for offenders.
• Prepares reports on offender history, progress, rule violations, visitation, and recommendations for special visits.
• Evaluates offender records, case notes, and compliance with laws, policies, and regulations under guidance.
• Conducts or monitors Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) screenings to assess victim/aggressor status.
• Monitors facility environment for security concerns to ensure safety.
• Identifies intervention techniques for offender behavioral issues.
• Assists offenders with concerns regarding job pay, trust funds, sentence information, and educational programs.
• Coordinates with outside agencies to expedite release plans or respond to emergencies.
• Schedules outside services to support offender transition from prison to the community.
• Develops and collaborates on reentry plans with re-entry counselors within established time frames.
• Acts as board chair during classification and reclassification hearings to determine custody levels and programmatic needs.
