About the role
Description Shape the future of consumer electronics and the software powering it by protecting the innovations behind some of the world's most-loved devices. As a Patent Attorney on the Devices patent team, you'll work directly with product managers, developers, engineers, and scientists to identify, protect, and counsel on intellectual property across a growing US and foreign patent portfolio — becoming a trusted advisor to the teams building new consumer devices and experiences that delight millions of customers. Occasional domestic travel is required. Seattle, WA is the preferred location for this attorney, but Sunnyvale, CA and Arlington, VA will be considered.
Responsibilities
- Engage product managers, developers, engineers, and scientists to identify protectable aspects of their innovations
- Work with outside counsel on the preparation, filing, and prosecution of US and foreign patent applications
- Provide direct client counseling on IP issues arising from product development and business transactions
- Analyze the patent portfolio and assess IP risk from third parties
Requirements
Basic Qualifications
5+ years of post bar admission legal experience
Juris Doctor and membership in one state bar or equivalent
Registered to practice before the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO)
Preferred Qualifications
Experience managing multiple projects and priorities across teams in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
Understanding of a wide variety of technology areas including: consumer device hardware and software, server-side infrastructure supporting the same, product design, systems for managing and delivering all types of digital content, machine learning, computer vision, and wireless communications
Ability to manage IP related activities for many business and technology teams in different locales, including training the business on patent filing and strategy, idea harvesting, management of patent application preparation and prosecution, and assisting in patent acquisitions, licensing, litigation, and open source issues
Effective oral and written communication skills in communicating business and legal issues to a wide variety of audiences including developers, engineers, business leaders, and legal professionals, at all levels of the organization
Have personally prepared and prosecuted at least 20 patent applications
