Position Summary
The Controller is the most critical accounting hire in Cornerstone's current build. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, this role owns the full accounting function and serves as the operational foundation for the finance organization. Responsibilities include oversight of the close process, general ledger integrity, accounts payable, payroll, banking operations, and transformation of the bookkeeping team. This is a build role, not a maintenance role. The Controller will establish structure, accountability, and reporting standards across a 400+ location national platform while ensuring sponsor-quality financial reporting in a private equity-backed environment.
Day One Ownership
- Own the monthly close process, calendar, and deliverables.
- Maintain general ledger integrity through journal entry review, reconciliations, and sign-off authority.
- Oversee accounts payable, payroll, leases, and corporate spend reconciliations.
- Lead treasury operations, including cash positioning and banking relationships.
- Lead the bookkeeping organization, including offshore and automation initiatives.
- Coordinate internal and external audits while maintaining audit readiness.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Reporting & General Ledger
- Own month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes across all entities.
- Prepare and review consolidated financial statements, including intercompany eliminations.
- Maintain general ledger integrity through reconciliations and journal entry review.
- Ensure GAAP compliance and consistent internal controls across all locations.
- Serve as the primary accounting escalation point for corporate and field teams.
Leadership & Team Development
- Lead and develop a distributed team of accountants and bookkeepers.
- Establish accountability, performance expectations, and standardized processes.
- Partner with the CFO to build and scale the accounting organization.
- Lead the bookkeeping transformation through automation and offshore migration.
Payroll Operations
- Oversee multi-state payroll processing and compliance.
- Ensure timely payroll tax remittance and regulatory compliance.
- Partner with HR on employee classifications, benefits deductions, and reporting.
- Improve Paylocity processes and system performance.
Accounts Payable, Leases & GL Operations
- Oversee accounts payable, lease accounting, and general ledger ownership.
- Strengthen controls around corporate spending, lease schedules, and reconciliations.
- Identify and remediate accounting control gaps.
Treasury & Banking
- Oversee treasury operations, including cash management, banking relationships, ZBA structures, and covenant compliance.
- Maintain banking structures, account access, and controls.
- Own bank reconciliations across all entities.
- Manage positive pay, lockbox services, and banking coordination.
- Serve as the primary accounting contact for banking partners.
Systems & Process Improvement
- Modernize accounting workflows through automation and process improvements.
- Optimize Sage Intacct, Paylocity, AxisCare, and FloQast.
- Develop standardized accounting procedures across the organization.
- Partner with the data infrastructure team on reporting automation.
Tax Oversight
- Oversee multi-state tax compliance across all operating entities.
- Manage the income tax provision process and deferred tax analysis.
- Coordinate with outside tax advisors and preparation firms.
- Monitor state nexus requirements as the company expands.
- Support tax planning related to acquisitions and organizational structure.
- Ensure tax reporting supports audit readiness and sponsor-quality financial reporting.
Compliance & Audit
- Lead internal and external audit processes.
- Design and maintain strong internal controls.
- Monitor compliance with accounting standards and regulatory requirements.
Qualifications
Required
- CPA required.
- Public accounting background with a Big 4 or strong regional firm.
- 10–14 years of progressive accounting experience.
- 3+ years within a private equity-backed operating company.
- Experience building or rebuilding accounting organizations.
- Experience managing accounting teams of 10–20+ employees.
- Deep expertise in GAAP, consolidations, intercompany accounting, and full-cycle accounting.
- Strong background in internal controls, audits, and multi-state compliance.
- Experience leading automation, offshore migration, or accounting transformation initiatives.
Preferred
- Healthcare, home care, or other regulated industry experience.
- Multi-site or distributed location business experience.
- Experience with Sage Intacct and FloQast.
- Familiarity with Paylocity or similar HRIS platforms.
- Experience leading bookkeeping organizations through automation and offshore transitions.
- Comfortable operating in fast-paced, high-growth environments with evolving infrastructure.
