Corporate Attorney III - Employment

About the role

Provides high-level, thoughtful and strategic legal advice and counseling on matters as assigned by the Chief Legal Officer, Sr. Vice President, or Sr. Counsel, related to employment law and other areas of the law based on ALSAC’s legal needs.

Responsibilities

  • Handles employment matters in various forums, including employee leave and accommodations, federal and state nondiscrimination matters, state and federal DOL matters, policy review, federal and state workplace reporting requirements, FCRA compliance, and workplace investigations.
  • Works with internal departments to identify legal issues and find cooperative, efficient and effective solutions.
  • Represents ALSAC in dealings with attorneys, entities, government officials, donors and other third-parties.
  • Provides legal advice and counsel on matters including fundraising; state compliance issues and charitable registrations; gaming issues; raffle licenses; special event licensing and permitting; business licenses; grant applications and compliance; insurance and risk management; property issues and disposition; government relations and legislative monitoring; reviewing and drafting contracts; technology and marketing matters; and special projects.
  • Demonstrates higher-level knowledge and competency in one or more areas of the law.
  • Handles higher-level issues from inception to completion skillfully, keeping supervisor appropriately informed and updated.
  • Works as a strategic business partner with internal departments and represents the organization to third parties.
  • Ensures all policies and guidelines are followed and resolves any issues identified in review.
  • Performs essential job functions in an established office environment under normal lighting and climate control tolerances.
  • Uses strong interpersonal, listening, negotiating and problem-solving skills to work with a variety of individuals within and outside the organization.
  • Recognizes and considers enterprise-wide impact of issues and solutions.
  • Develops policies relating to industry-specific issues and internal practices and action plans for solving issues and assists in implementation.
  • Ensures prompt, timely and complete responses to information and research requests submitted to the Legal Department.
  • Generates written communication to ensure legal conclusions are documented appropriately and disseminated to those with a need to know.
  • Maintains and develops expertise about laws, regulations, and court decisions affecting fundraising and other areas of law applicable to ALSAC.
  • Uses significant experience of practiced law; demonstrates a higher level of knowledge and competency in one or more areas of the law.
  • Works independently to develop consistency, perform in-depth research and analysis.

Requirements

  • Ability to handle highly technical legal matters independently and with the discernment needed to keep supervisor appropriately informed and updated.
  • Experience working with regulatory agencies and/or oversight bodies and/or in-house for a large organization.
  • Ability to interpret relevant regulations and contractual provisions and/or litigation and contract experience.
  • Strong critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to handle more complex legal assignments independently and appropriately.
  • Ability to communicate the results to non-lawyers in a proactive and customer-friendly way, even as it relates to difficult issues.
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to communicate legal issues clearly and understandably to non-lawyers.
  • Ability to multitask and handle a number of high-level and high-stress projects.
  • Strong ability to work with business partners within the organization and those outside the organization, such as outside attorneys, entities, government officials, donors and other third-parties.
  • Clear and understandable written and verbal communication; understands complex verbal and written instructions.
  • Excellent proofreading skills; knowledgeable in Microsoft Office products, including Word and Excel.
  • Juris Doctorate Degree.
  • Licensed to practice law in TN.
  • 5–7 years of experience in a legal environment or related experience handling employment matters, including employee leave and accommodations, federal and state nondiscrimination matters, state and federal DOL matters, policy review, federal and state workplace reporting requirements, FCRA compliance, and workplace investigations.
