Coroner Transport Specialist Full-Time

Boulder County Coroner's Office is seeking to hire a Coroner Transport Specialist Full-Time. This position performs technical, physically demanding forensic work supporting the Boulder County Coroner’s Office during overnight hours, weekends, and holidays in a variety of field settings within Boulder County. Work is both physically and emotionally demanding, requiring employees to occasionally assist in raising or lowering objects with a minimum of 150 pounds.

About the role

This position is responsible for transportation of decedents (fleet vehicles are provided), coordinating logistics, and providing daily operations support for the Coroner’s Office, Operations Division. The role involves a variety of administrative forensic and analytical duties in the field of death investigation, including intake and processing of decedents, evidence collection, and assisting with emergency preparedness and mass fatality incidents. This is a full-time, benefited position that requires working evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays, with possible overtime dependent on calls-for-service. The position is based at 5610 Flatiron Pkwy, Boulder, Colorado.

Responsibilities

• Operate a fleet vehicle to respond to scene locations, recover, and prepare decedents for transport to the coroner’s office; pick-up and delivery of specimens and/or records from laboratories, hospitals, care centers, and physician offices.
• Assist in the maintenance of fleet vehicles for daily operations, including overall cleanliness, monitoring supplies, and equipment.
• Intake and process decedents into the custody of the coroner’s office; collect and preserve physical and medical evidence.
• Physically lift, move, and load bodies, including infants, children, and decedents that may be fragmented, burned, or in advanced stages of decomposition.
• Collect fingerprints for identification purposes.
• Perform limited scope diagnostic imaging (x-ray) for identification, documentation of trauma, and evidence location and collection.
• Perform limited photography of decedents and death scenes.
• Collect, inventory, document, and protect the integrity of evidence and personal effects via chain of custody.
• Assist in the release of decedents to authorized parties.
• Perform a variety of case-related data entry via case management system.
• Assist with emergency preparedness and mass fatality incidents.
• May be required to be ‘on-call’ to respond to emergencies.
• Perform related work as required, including reassignment during emergency situations.

Requirements

• A high school diploma or equivalent.
• Valid driver’s license and a clean driving record; access to reliable transportation for commuting.
• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Must pass a pre-employment drug test and polygraph examination.
• Must be able to work days, nights, graveyard shifts, weekends, holidays, and maintain on-call availability.
• Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment.
• Must successfully complete a pre-employment physical assessment, including a basic person lift to gurney and transport vehicle gurney loading/unloading using a mannequin.
• Must reside in the state of Colorado as of the first day of work.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bilingual in English and Spanish (additional compensation provided for bilingual skills).
• Two years of experience in a service-related industry involving transportation of individuals in a medical, law enforcement, or funeral service capacity.
• Experience working in highly stressful situations and environments while demonstrating professionalism and calmness.
• Experience or education specific to biology, criminalistics, forensic science, nursing, emergency medical technician, paramedic, forensic anthropology, anatomy and physiology, or related field.
• Experience in a coroner’s/medical examiner's office, law enforcement, medical field, or funeral service.
• Experience with data entry and report writing.
• Experience conducting or assisting with the intake and disposition of decedents, handling bio-hazardous materials/waste, property, evidence, toxicology, histology, medication, and other specimens.

• Skill in the use of computers and related software applications.

Physical Requirements

• Frequently lowers or lifts a minimum of 150 lbs.
• Occasionally pushes and pulls items weighing a minimum of 150 lbs.
• Frequently bends at waist, squats, and kneels.
• Foot travel may require hiking up/down mountains, climbing up/down waterway embankments, navigating scorched terrain while packing equipment.
• May navigate narrow spaces, stairs, and driveways.

Pay

Hiring salary range: $52,008.00 - $57,886.40 annually. Full salary range: $52,008.00 - $72,084.00 annually.
