Core Technician (Temporary)

About the role

Hudbay (TSX, NYSE: HBM) is a copper-focused mining company with three long-life operations and a world-class pipeline of copper growth projects in tier-one mining-friendly jurisdictions of Canada, Peru and the United States. The role involves obtaining quality samples from exploratory drill core, preparing samples for shipment, and assisting in field works.

Responsibilities

• Obtain quality samples from exploratory drill core.
• Unstack core boxes onto racks for geologists to log core.
• Prepare sample bags by labelling with legible sample numbers from provided lists.
• Sample drill core by utilizing an automated core cutting saw to split core in half.
• Ensure representative cut core is collected for analysis in correct bags defined by sample depths provided by geologists.
• Prepare samples for shipment by loading bags into totes or supersacks.
• Strap core pallets once sampling is complete.
• Load delivery truck with propane-powered forklift.
• Place stacked pallets in yard with forklift in an organized manner.
• Maintain good housekeeping practices.
• Continuously maintain good housekeeping practices.
• Maintain daily progress reports.
• Assist in logging, sampling, and general labor.
• Weigh core boxes and record values in spreadsheets.
• Take measurements with tape measures of recovered core lengths and enter measurements into spreadsheets.
• Move and unstack pallets of drill core for various geophysical and geotechnical analyses.
• Help stake road, sample, and drill pad locations in the field site roughly 30 minutes west of Yerington.
• Perform general labor tasks.
• Pick up people or supplies from as far Reno Nevada if needed in company vehicles.
• Assist geology and survey department with field works, housekeeping, and general labor tasks as required.

• Work will be primarily outside, under an open tent shelter with the core saw, or in a warehouse setting.

Requirements

• High School diploma or GED.
• Ability to lift 75 lbs. and meet all other requirements of the job.
• Positive work ethic.
• Maintain a drug and alcohol-free workplace.
• Possess a valid Driver’s License.

Qualifications

• Previous outdoor labor experience.
• Forklift experience.
• Basic MS Excel and Word experience.

Skills

• Strong attention to detail.
• Physical stamina and strength.
• Attention to safety protocols.
