Job Description

The Laboratory Supervisor position provides technical leadership for the department supervised. Key responsibilities include test development, Quality Control, Quality Assurance, workflow coordination, department training and orientation, supervision of the technical and non-technical employees, and interaction with vendors.

  • Maintain laboratory standards with accrediting bodies such as AABB, CAP, CDC, CLIA, FACHT, FDA, JCAHO, and HCFA.
  • Complete and submit evaluations to the Laboratory Manager (including initial competency and skills assessment/validation).
  • Perform direct observation and ensure competency for all department staff.
  • Monitor, trend, and report all Quality Improvement indicators.
  • Recommend and implement improvements necessary to achieve operational goals and improve patient outcomes.
  • Maintain quality control and proficiency testing for the department.
  • Ensure accreditation standards are met for the department in accordance with CAP, JCAHO, CLIA, AABB, FDA, OSHA, etc.
  • Demonstrate comprehension of all procedures within the department as defined in the Procedure Manuals.
  • Review Manuals biannually, revise procedures as necessary.
  • Evaluate test results, resolve discrepancies, investigate physician complaints.
  • Distribute workload to section staff, considering priority of work and skill of the employee.
  • Prepare staff schedule to ensure adequate department coverage.
  • Maintain an adequate reagent and supply inventory in the department.
  • Evaluate new technologies for the section in conjunction with the Medical Director of the department.
  • Collaborate with Manager and other Supervisors to meet the educational needs of the staff through presentations, educational materials, online learning, offsite meetings, etc.
  • Make recommendations to the Manager for hires, promotions, disciplinary actions, and terminations.
  • Meet regularly with section Medical Director and seek involvement regarding capital purchases, operational, and technical issues.

Shift Requirements

  • Shift Length: 8 hours
  • # Shifts/Week: 5
  • Overtime Required: Infrequently

Education

  • MT(ASCP), MT(AMT), MT(HEW), qualified as a technologist under CLIA rules, or equivalent.
  • Appropriate Bachelor’s degree required to meet CLIA rules.
  • Four (4) years of hospital laboratory experience in department supervising.
  • Previous supervisory experience preferred.
  • Previous experience with automated equipment in department supervising preferred.
  • MT(ASCP), MT(AMT), MT(HEW) certification required.
  • Specialty certification from American Society of Clinical Pathology (SBB,SC,SH,SM, SCYM, SMB) preferred.

Experience

  • Four (4) years of hospital laboratory experience in department supervising.
  • Previous supervisory experience preferred.
  • Previous experience with automated equipment in department supervising preferred.
