About the role
We are seeking detail-oriented temporary Copy Editors/Proofreaders to support the production and publication of technical insurance and regulatory content. This role is responsible for reviewing, editing, proofreading, and validating documents to ensure accuracy, consistency, adherence to established style standards, and compliance with publication requirements. The Copy Editor/Proofreader will work closely with internal business partners to meet heavy production deadlines, maintain content quality, and ensure published materials align with our client’s established editorial standards and plain language principles. Those in this position will be held to strong quality and production metrics and deliverables.
Responsibilities
- Edit and proofread documents for grammar, spelling, punctuation, clarity, consistency, and adherence to established style guidelines.
- Review content for accuracy, formatting, and compliance with publication specifications and internal standards.
- Verify information and identify errors, inconsistencies, or omissions requiring correction before publication.
- Manage multiple assignments and deadlines within a production-focused environment.
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders to clarify content requirements, resolve editorial issues, and ensure timely delivery of published materials.
- Apply plain language principles to improve readability and usability of business communications and published content.
- Interpret and follow documented procedures, editorial guidelines, and reference materials including the Chicago Manual of Style, Gregg Reference Manual, and client’s specific style standards.
- Support the production of technical and insurance-related publications requiring a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
Requirements
- 3-5 years of progressive professional editing, proofreading, technical writing, publishing, communications, or related experience.
- Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, or other relevant degree program; in lieu of a bachelor’s degree, an associate’s degree with a combination of 5 years editorial and publications experience may be considered.
- Demonstrated expertise in grammar, punctuation, spelling, and editorial best practices.
- Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Word and Adobe Acrobat.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently while effectively partnering with cross-functional stakeholders.
- Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality work.
- Ability to work in a metric-based production environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with technical, regulatory, legal, insurance, financial, or procedural content.
- Familiarity with plain language principles and style guide governance.
- Experience working in a publishing, production, documentation, or content management environment.
Pay
$20.00 to $25.00 per hour on W2; the rate may be negotiable within this range based on experience, education, geographic location, and other factors.
