About the Role

This position provides leadership in the development and implementation of special education services. The Coordinator trains, observes, and coaches teachers of students across all grade levels and plays a vital role in coordinating special education services within a designated cluster of schools.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and monitor special education programs tailored to the needs of students within the designated cluster of schools.
  • Provide guidance, training, and professional development opportunities for teachers and support staff to enhance their ability to meet the needs of students with disabilities.
  • Collaborate with school staff to develop Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and monitor student progress to ensure appropriate interventions and accommodations are provided.
  • Foster effective communication and collaboration among teachers, administrators, parents, and external agencies involved in supporting students with special needs.
  • Assist in the allocation of resources, including personnel, materials, and technology, to support the effective delivery of special education services.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant laws, regulations, and policies governing special education services, and maintain accurate documentation related to student progress, interventions, and services provided.
  • Provide support and guidance in managing crisis situations involving students with special needs, including behavior management strategies and coordination with appropriate support services.
  • Stay informed about current research, best practices, and developments in the field of special education, and facilitate professional development opportunities for staff members.
  • Advocate for the rights and needs of students with disabilities within the educational system and community and promote inclusive practices that support the full participation and success of all students.

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Special Education or related field (required).
  • Four (4) years of experience working with students with disabilities (required).
  • Hold or be eligible for a valid Virginia Teaching License (required).
  • Licensure/certification in Special Education (preferred).
