Coordinator of Prevention Services and Addiction Counselor

About the role

The Student Counseling Center is seeking a Coordinator of Prevention Services and Addictions Counselor to plan, develop and carry out initiatives in substance use, suicide prevention programs; create and manage the center’s prevention work-plan; create and participate in public speaking presentations in the residence halls, the USD Greek system, and other student organizations; work with student staff and para-professionals in prevention planning; oversee the delivery of substance use prevention programming and serve as the Prevention Specialist Advisor to any on-campus task forces.

Responsibilities

• Create and manage the center’s prevention work-plan
• Create and participate in public speaking presentations in the residence halls, the USD Greek system, and other student organizations
• Work with student staff and para-professionals in prevention planning
• Serve as the Prevention Specialist Advisor to any on-campus task forces
• If certified/licensed in Chemical Dependency, spend up to 35% time in delivery of services including assessment, treatment planning, and treatment to persons with substance use concerns/disorders
• Oversee the delivery of substance use prevention programming
• Work evenings and weekends as needed
• Some travel within the state for meetings and programming is required

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in ADAS, counseling, health services, or a related field (with addiction counseling specialization) required
• Must have the basic courses approved by the SD Board of Addiction Counseling and Professionals for trainee status in Addictions Counseling
• Prefer candidate who is certified/licensed as an Addictions Counselor in South Dakota
• Knowledge of prevention program development; a strong understanding of the full range of developmental and mental health challenges affecting young adults; specifically higher education social, behavioral, psychological, and physical effects of chemical use; needs assessment, alcohol and other drug assessment tools, prevention and treatment strategies; spreadsheets, data-base and power-point production
• Ability to identify needs and gaps within prevention domains; identify characteristics of impaired groups caused by chemical use; gather, interpret, report, and use information concerning community and clients; establish and maintain effective prevention strategies with groups and motivational and strategic counseling relationships with clients; formulate prevention plans and make recommendations concerning agency policy change and campus community climate; support the university’s values and the practice of Inclusive Excellence; perform after-hours educational presentations interact effectively with college-age populations, international students, parents, faculty, and college administrators is also essential

Pay

Salary is commensurate with qualifications.

Schedule

Typical hours worked per week: 8am-5pm M-F with some necessary hours in the evening and on weekends.
