About the role

The Coordinator of Music & Liturgy is an integral member of the parish staff, fostering the spiritual growth of the parish community through music and liturgy. This position is responsible for planning, coordinating, and overseeing all aspects of the parish's liturgical celebrations and music ministry.

Responsibilities

  • Recruit, train, and develop talent from within the Parish community.
  • Prepare and schedule all music ministers and cantors for the liturgies.
  • Re-establish, build, direct (and accompany as needed) the parish choir and a seasonal children’s choir and perhaps a regular children’s choir if participation levels are adequate.
  • Prepare and select music for Masses and special liturgical events.
  • Attend all required meetings with pastoral staff, musicians, cantors and Liturgy Committee as required.
  • Provide organ and piano accompaniment for some, but not all weekend Masses, Holy Day Masses, Christmas and Easter Masses and assign schedules to cantors and musicians for the remaining liturgies.
  • Coordinate liturgical services in conjunction with the OCIA team.
  • Coordinate with the Director of Religious Education (DRE) for Confirmations, First Communions and any special liturgy.
  • Meet with the liturgy director and families for funerals regarding the music for the liturgy. Assure all music for the funeral is sacred and appropriate.
  • Plan music with engaged couples for their wedding ceremony, assuring all music is sacred and appropriate.
  • Assist the families for funerals and wedding couple in selecting an appropriate musician and/or cantor for their services if the Music Director does not provide these services.
  • Acts as a witness to Gospel values by modeling the teachings of the Catholic Church.
  • Supports and adheres to the policies and procedures of the school and Archdiocese of San Antonio, including the Religious Standards for Catholic School Employees.
  • Adherence to the Code of Conduct and the Faith and Moral Policy is mandatory.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Pastor.

Liturgical duties

  • Coordinate with the Pastor for major parish liturgical celebrations and with other parish staff in the preparation of parish sacramental celebrations and rites.
  • Complete all liturgy planners for the Archdiocese when needed.
  • Assist with creating the Scoop Sheet for Sunday Masses (English/ Spanish) and special liturgies.
  • Prepare Prayers of the Faithful for Weekday and Weekend masses.
  • Coordinate Church environment for liturgical seasons.
  • Make sure Altar, Tabernacle, Gospel, and Lector stand cloths are coordinated with the liturgical season.
  • Coordinate with the Altar society to assist with decorating for all Major seasons.
  • Order/reorder worship aids (hymnals, pamphlets, music for Music ministry).
  • Keep music license up to date (CCIL, One license).
  • Direct and guide all musicians and cantors; assess performance and reliability of these individuals.
  • Cookinate/communicate with Liturgical Ministry Coordinators Inform Ministry Coordinators of upcoming liturgies (Dates, times, number of ministers needed).
  • Updates Liturgical Ministry Coordinators on any New Procedures and Continuous Education.
  • Cookinate training/commissioning/VIRTUS Compliant.
  • Facilitate monthly Ministry Coordinators meetings.
  • Order items needed for all liturgical ministries.
  • Cookinate the Ministry Fair twice a year.
  • Assist with resolving any issues, conflicts, or concerns with all Liturgical ministries.

Requirements

  • Education & Experience:
    • A degree in Music, Liturgical Music, or a related field, or equivalent experience in music direction within a church setting.
    • Demonstrated experience in liturgical ministry and church-related functions.
    • Practicing Roman Catholic in good standing, actively participating in parish life.
    • Familiarity with Catholic liturgical norms, sacramental practices, and parish ministry operations.
  • Professional Competencies:
    • Strong understanding of group dynamics with the ability to build and maintain effective working relationships across diverse populations.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; able to engage effectively with staff, parishioners, and the public.
    • Collaborative, team-oriented approach with flexibility to support parish needs.
    • Minimum Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities:
      • Commitment to the mission and teachings of the Catholic Church.
      • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to relate to children, youth, and adults from varied backgrounds.
      • Strong leadership and organizational skills, with the ability to coordinate and motivate volunteer musicians and choirs.
      • Effective presentation skills; able to communicate information clearly and respond to questions appropriately.
      • Adaptable and responsive to changing priorities, schedules, and parish needs.
      • Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends.
      • Musically proficient in both Spanish and English preferred, as well as excellent verbal and written communication skills.
      • Proficiency in playing the piano or organ and a comprehensive understanding of liturgical music.
      • Practicing catholic with a thorough understanding of Catholic liturgy and traditions, and a commitment to the values and mission of Holy Trinity Catholic Church.
      • Must be able to work flexible hours including some nights and weekends.
      • Ability to read and interpret standard musical notation.
      • Working knowledge of sound systems and basic technology.
      • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and music-related software.
      • Bilingual ability preferred but not required.
  • Additional Requirements:
    • Must pass Archdiocesan Safe Environment Requirements and background screening.
    • Must pass Texas DPS Fingerprint-based Applicant Clearinghouse screening.
