About the role
Prepare and cook aesthetically pleasing, nutritional food for residents, staff, and guests of the Minnesota Veterans Home – Minneapolis. This is a part-time (0.80 FTE) position with a work schedule of 64 hours per 2-week pay period; additional hours may be assigned based on business needs. The position is initially eligible for full employer contribution towards health and dental insurance benefits.
The Minnesota Veterans Home in Minneapolis provides skilled nursing care in a supportive environment that fosters a stable, healthy, and meaningful life for Veterans. The campus is located on 53 wooded acres with nature trails and biking paths overlooking the Mississippi River, offering a creative, fun, collaborative, and stimulating work environment that encourages career growth.
Schedule
- Varies: Day shift (5:00 am – 1:30 pm) or Evening shift (10:30 am – 7:00 pm)
- Days off: Wednesday, Thursday, Friday
- Shift differential pay of $2.25 per hour for hours worked before 6:00 am or after 6:00 pm
Pay
$21.78 – $29.73 per hour • $45,477 – $62,076 annually
New hire bonus of $2,500 for full-time positions represented by the AFSCME collective bargaining agreement.
Responsibilities
- Prepare and cook food for a large number of people, adjusting recipes as needed
- Prepare special medical diets
- Follow health and safety principles in food preparation to ensure safe and healthy meals
- Read and comprehend written instructions
Requirements
- Knowledge of large-scale cooking methods and equipment
- Understanding of food values, nutrition, and standard recipes
- Ability to follow instructions and prepare meals according to health and safety standards
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
To be considered, your resume must clearly describe your experience in the following areas:
- Experience with large-scale cooking methods and equipment sufficient to prepare and serve food for a large number of people and adjust recipes
- Knowledge of food values, nutrition, and health and safety principles in food preparation
- Ability to follow instructions, read and comprehend written instructions, and prepare special medical diets
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience cooking in a large long-term care facility
- Experience with inventory and stocking
Additional Requirements
- Employment reference checks, including review of job performance documentation and contact with former employers
- Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS) background check (must pass to be hired)
- Tuberculosis (Mantoux) screening or chest x-ray prior to employment
