About the role

This position prepares and cooks aesthetically pleasing, nutritional food for residents, staff, and guests of the Minnesota Veterans Home - Minneapolis. The role is part-time (0.80 FTE) with a work schedule of 64 hours per 2-week pay period, which may include additional hours based on business needs. The position is initially eligible for full employer contribution towards health and dental insurance benefits.

The Minnesota Veterans Home in Minneapolis provides skilled nursing care in a supportive environment that fosters a stable, healthy, and meaningful life for Veterans. The campus is located on Minnehaha Avenue with easy access to highways and public transportation, featuring a beautiful 53-acre wooded setting with nature trails and biking paths overlooking the Mississippi River.

Schedule

  • Varies: Day shift (5:00 am – 1:30 pm) and Evening shift (10:30 am – 7:00 pm)
  • Days off: Wednesday, Thursday, Friday
  • Shift differential pay: $2.25 per hour for hours worked before 6:00 am or after 6:00 pm

Pay

Salary Range: $21.78 - $29.73 per hour ($45,477 - $62,076 annually)

New hire bonus: $2,500 for full-time positions represented by the AFSCME collective bargaining agreement (eligibility may apply).

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and cook food for a large number of people, adjusting recipes as needed.
  • Follow standard recipes and prepare special medical diets.
  • Apply knowledge of food values, nutrition, and health and safety principles in food preparation.
  • Operate large-scale cooking equipment and methods.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

To be considered, your resume must clearly describe your experience in the following areas:

  • Experience with large-scale cooking methods and equipment sufficient to prepare and serve food for a large number of people.
  • Knowledge of food values and nutrition to prepare items from standard recipes.
  • Understanding of health and safety principles in food preparation operations.
  • Ability to follow instructions and prepare special medical diets.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience cooking in a large long-term care facility.
  • Experience with inventory and stocking.

Additional Requirements

  • Successful completion of employment reference checks, including review of job performance documentation and contact with former employers.
  • Pass a Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS) background check.
  • Tuberculosis (Mantoux) screening or chest x-ray prior to employment.
