JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY

The Inpatient Cook works with the Chef and the interdisciplinary team. The Cook prepares meals according to health and safety standards and dietary requirements, ensuring compliance with licensing requirements and dietary recommendations. The Cook collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to provide meals that meet the nutritional needs of terminally ill patients, respects and promotes VNA Health's mission, vision, and values, and adheres to therapeutic diets as prescribed.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prepares meals according to health and safety standards, in accordance with licensing requirements and dietary recommendations.
  • Works with interdisciplinary team to provide meals that satisfy the terminally ill patient.
  • Works with the chef to monitor use of all food items.
  • Helps ensure patient food preferences are adhered to as much as possible, substituting for refused food from appropriate food groups.
  • Provides therapeutic diets as prescribed, planning, preparing, and serving them with supervision and/or consultation from the Chef and dietician.
  • Maintains accurate records of refrigeration.
  • Cleans and maintains a safe kitchen environment, equipment, and all patient food utensils and items.
  • Works with the chef to adhere to Serenity House budget.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

  • Preferred but not required: Certified Cook.
  • Hospice and home care experience preferred.
  • Understanding of the nutritional needs of the terminally ill.
  • Understanding of the psychosocial issues of food and caregiving.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work well individually and in cooperation with an interdisciplinary group.
  • Basic working knowledge and skill of computers (email) required.
  • Must have ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with professionals and lay group.
  • Reliable transportation.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.
  • Ability to push/pull 50 lbs.
  • Ability to stoop, bend, and squat.
  • Ability to walk up one flight of stairs.
  • Ability to walk one mile.
  • Ability to sit for one hour, minimum.
  • Visual and audio acuity.
