ECU Health Medical Center, one of four academic medical centers in North Carolina, is the 974-bed flagship hospital for ECU Health and serves as the primary teaching hospital for The Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University. The center has achieved Magnet® designation twice and provides acute and intermediate care, rehabilitation, and outpatient health services to a 29-county region.
About the role
This position is responsible for the preparation, assembly, and serving of food products to customers. Food preparation includes, but is not limited to: meats, vegetables, soups, bakery items, desserts, and appetizers for patient, retail, and catering areas. The role involves serving as a specialty cook, preparing specialty food according to standardized recipes and specific methods to create high-quality products. Additionally, the position includes short order/grill cooking duties to prepare food items per customer specifications.
Responsibilities
- Prepare, assemble, and serve food products for patients, retail, and catering areas.
- Prepare specialty food items according to standardized recipes and specific cooking methods.
- Perform short order/grill cooking duties to meet customer specifications.
- Work independently and complete assignments in a timely manner.
- Maintain a positive attitude while functioning under pressure.
Requirements
- Must be able to read, write, and speak English (Bilingual in Spanish is preferred).
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to multi-task and maintain a positive attitude.
- Basic culinary skills appropriate for the position.
- Ability to read, comprehend, and follow standardized recipes.
- Good working knowledge of food preparation.
- Experience with institutional kitchen equipment and large-volume food preparation.
- Positive and upbeat personality with excellent customer service skills.
- 3 to 5 years of experience in a hospital setting is required.
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to stand for long periods of time (up to 6 hours).
- Requires agility, dexterity, and long periods of walking (up to 6 hours).
- Must be able to bend, carry, or lift supplies and equipment weighing 50 pounds or more.
Schedule
- Full time with benefits - 40 hours per week.
- Day shift: 11:00 AM - 7:30 PM.
- Rotating weekends and holidays.
