Responsibilities
- Operate food service equipment including baking, roasting, broiling, grilling, steaming all types of food products.
- Demonstrate working knowledge of food sanitation and acceptable techniques in handling and service of food to guests.
- Apply basic food preparation techniques, including receiving, storage, preparation and holding of food items.
- Understand dietary restrictions or modified diets.
- Follow accepted techniques in handling, preparation and service of food items to customers.
- Assist during tray line assembly process.
- Maintain clean floors and assist with overall kitchen cleanliness; consistently demonstrate concern for cleanliness of work area.
- Follow proper lifting techniques and kitchen safety protocols to avoid accidents.
- Wash items by hand, such as pots and pans.
- Plan ahead and set up for the next day by prepping and organizing accordingly.
Qualifications
- Ability to read, write and communicate in English and Spanish.
- 2 to 4 years of hospital, nursing home, school or institutional cooking experience.
- Commitment to and adherence to STHS’s Compliance Program and Code of Conduct through compliance with all policies and procedures, attendance at required training, and immediate reporting of suspected compliance issues to the Compliance Officer.
Education / Licensure
- Certified by the City of McAllen or Edinburg (depending on facility) or accredited by the State of Texas and ANSI—the American National Standard Institute as a food handler.
- High School diploma, GED, or higher education required; or at least two years of previous experience as a Cook may be considered in lieu of a degree.
