About the role
The Agency Safety Division of the Department of Public Safety seeks a Cook (S) to join the Division of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. This division works together to strengthen North Carolina's youth and families, focusing on the reduction and prevention of juvenile delinquency.
Responsibilities
- Assist the Food Service Supervisor
- Support the facility’s Child Nutrition Program
- Maintain compliance with Department’s Federal Child Nutrition Program regulations
- Prepare nutritionally adequate meals meeting federal meal patterns
- Maintain required records, reports, and inventories in compliance with federal and state regulations
- Requisition food and supplies as needed
- Maintain high standards of personal cleanliness and food sanitation
- Interpret and follow standard recipes and prescribed menus
- Check the cost and quality of items received and ensure proper storage
- Comply with policies and procedures of the Department
- Assume any responsibilities as designated by supervisors
Requirements
This position requires a passion for helping court-involved youth and a commitment to the reduction and prevention of juvenile delinquency. Candidates should have a strong understanding of the Federal Child Nutrition Program and ServSafe Certification. Work schedule varies to meet the needs of juveniles and their families, including on-call hours, weekends, and holidays.
Qualifications
The minimum education and experience required for this position includes some state job postings that allow qualification through an “equivalent combination of education and experience.” Candidates must have education or experience in food preparation that is directly related to the job and consistent with accepted practices of the trade, equivalent to one year of experience in a commercial and/or institutional setting.
Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of methods of preparing different types of foods in large quantities
- Knowledge of the temperatures of various foods
- General knowledge of the Federal Child Nutrition Program
- ServSafe Certification

Pay
The salary range for this position is $31,200-$48,810, determined by relevant qualifications, internal equity, and budgetary considerations. Salary will be based on the merit-based recruitment and selection plan.
Schedule
The work schedule for this position varies to meet the needs of juveniles and their families, including on-call hours, weekends, and holidays on a rotating basis.
