About the Role

The Cook is responsible for the preparation, service, and storage of nutritious meals and snacks for a Head Start/Early Head Start Center. This position promotes the mission of ABCD Head Start & Children's Services by communicating it to staff, families, and the community. Compliance with federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and standards is required, including those from ACF, EEC, IDEA, DESE, USDA, and ABCD policies. All personnel are mandated reporters of suspected child abuse or neglect.

Responsibilities

• Implement cycle menus in accordance with ABCD policies, Head Start Performance Standards, and CACFP guidance, while adhering to budget requirements.
• Maintain a weekly food inventory system for ordering supplies and ensure timely ordering for meals, snacks, and field trips.
• Verify the quantity and quality of incoming food orders and report issues to the Food Services Administrator or Central Office.
• Document daily menu substitutions, including weekly Cultural Meals, and submit changes to the Central Office monthly.
• Collaborate with Health & Nutrition staff to prepare alternative meals for children with food allergies, following individual meal plans and state regulations.
• Prepare age-appropriate meals, considering texture, consistency, and food size standards.
• Supervise the preparation and service of nutritious meals and snacks.
• Maintain all required CACFP paperwork, including production records, temperature logs, inventories, and receipts.
• Uphold sanitation, safety, and food preparation standards as mandated by the Department of Public Health.
• Identify and report equipment repair or maintenance needs promptly.
• Maintain kitchen, utensils, equipment, and food storage areas to standards set by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.
• Participate in Health Inspections with Local Boards of Health.
• Order food and supplies from vendors or the nutritionist according to schedule and verify deliveries against invoices.
