Cook 1
Seasonal classified position at the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology (OIMB), with ongoing availability and unpaid breaks of up to a month between academic terms.
About the role
The Cook 1 prepares and serves meals for students, staff, visiting groups, and special events at OIMB. Responsibilities include food storage, kitchen and equipment cleaning, maintaining sanitary work areas, and record-keeping, including an accurate count of meals served. The position involves preparing meals according to menus, recipes, or verbal instructions using methods such as boiling, grilling, steaming, roasting, and baking. OIMB serves three meals a day, seven days a week for an average of 25-50 people, with special events increasing this number to up to 110.
Work Conditions
- Work in a commercial kitchen with stoves, ovens, hot liquids, steam, machinery with moving parts or blades, and sharp implements.
- Ability to lift, push, pull, and carry items up to 50 pounds, and use a step stool to reach items on top shelves.
- Work briefly in a walk-in cooler and freezer, over hot cooking surfaces, and in humid conditions.
Schedule
Flexible schedule that may include night, weekend, and holiday shifts. Schedules vary based on unit needs and may include morning, afternoon, evening, and weekend shifts.
Special Requirements
- Must have or obtain a current Oregon Food Handler card within two weeks of employment.
- May drive a university vehicle for grocery shopping; requires a valid driver’s license and ability to obtain UO Driver’s/Van Certification if assigned.
Requirements
- One (1) year of experience as a cook in a commercial food service facility, OR
- Certificate of Completion in culinary arts and/or Foods and Hospitality Service from a certified community college or technical school.
Skills
- Ability to utilize menus, recipes, worksheets, and usage reports.
- Basic math skills for scaling recipes.
- Record-keeping skills.
- Strong customer service skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
Pay
$18.06 - $23.88 per hour (full-time equivalent).
