Controls Technician
About the Role
We are seeking a Controls Technician based in the Cleveland, Ohio area to support the installation, commissioning, and troubleshooting of building automation and HVAC control systems across commercial and light industrial facilities. This role focuses on delivering high-quality field execution, including system startup, diagnostics, and optimization.
Key Responsibilities
- Install, commission, and troubleshoot building automation and HVAC control systems in accordance with project plans and specifications.
- Perform system diagnostics and resolve issues related to controllers, sensors, actuators, and networks.
- Conduct point-to-point verification and functional testing to ensure systems operate per sequence of operations.
- Modify and optimize existing BAS systems as required.
- Identify root causes of system issues and implement corrective solutions.
- Configure operator workstations and associated software.
- Calibrate and install controllers and field devices.
- Support system startup and ensure proper operation of mechanical and electrical equipment.
- Afford assistance with system upgrades, retrofits, and expansions.
- Communicate effectively with project managers, customers, and field teams throughout project execution.
- Provide updates on work progress, site conditions, and any issues encountered.
- Support coordination with general contractors, mechanical contractors, engineers, and other trades.
- Provide basic system training for end users during project handover.
- Complete commissioning documentation and provide accurate information for as-built drawings.
- Participate in third-party commissioning activities when required.
- Maintain clear and accurate service and project records.
- Follow all safety protocols and maintain a high standard of job site safety.
- Continuously develop technical skills through training and field experience.
Qualifications
- 2-5+ years of experience in building automation, HVAC controls, or related field roles.
- Strong understanding of HVAC systems and control strategies.
- Hands-on experience with BAS/DDC systems and field devices.
- Familiarity with communication protocols (e.g., BACnet, Modbus).
- Basic knowledge of networking fundamentals (IP addressing, connectivity).
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Effective communication skills, both technical and customer-facing.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with BAS platforms (e.g., Delta Controls, Niagara/Tridium, Distech, Siemens, Johnson Controls, etc.).
- Experience with system commissioning, startup, or service work.
- Electrical troubleshooting experience with low-voltage control systems.
- Exposure to programming or graphics within BAS platforms.
Work Location & Travel
Must be based in or near Cleveland, OH. Primarily local travel within the Greater Cleveland area. Occasional regional travel may be required depending on project needs.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, and work on job sites for extended periods.
- Ability to climb ladders, stairs, and work in confined or mechanical spaces.
- Ability to lift and carry equipment up to 50 pounds.
- Manual dexterity to handle tools, wiring, and components.
- Ability to work in varied indoor and outdoor conditions.
- Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
