Controls Technician
About the role
The Energy Management group within the Energy & Utilities (EU) Division of the Facilities & Operations (F&O) Directorate at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) is seeking a Control Technician to support the operation, maintenance, and enhancement of the Energy Management Control System (EMCS), central utility PLC systems, and site-wide metering infrastructure.
Responsibilities
- Program, troubleshoot, and upgrade Niagara4 integrated systems (Phoenix Controls), Automated Logic Controls (ALC), and/or Allan Bradley Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs).
- Maintain and monitor daily building operations, respond to system alarms, and investigate any equipment or system issues.
- Help expand and improve the site's energy monitoring and metering systems.
- Update control systems, including software, graphics, networking, and hardware installations.
- Provide field support to electricians, mechanics, and technicians for system installations and root cause analysis.
- Troubleshoot communication issues.
- Support database setup, and trend monitoring for energy systems.
Requirements
- Requires a high school diploma or equivalent plus:
- a BS degree in a technical field and 4 years work experience or;
- a technical institute, Adult BOCES certification, AA degree in a technical field, CCI program completion at BNL plus 8 years experience or;
- a technical high school certification program (e.g. BOCES) and 9 years relevant work experience or;
- 10 years relevant work experience.
- Demonstrated knowledge of programming, and maintaining building control and industrial PLC systems.
- Minimum 3 years of hands-on experience with building automation or HVAC controls.
- Strong field experience troubleshooting HVAC control systems.
- Proficient in reading electrical, mechanical, and control drawings.
- Valid NYS driver’s license.
- Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Fluent in English (reading, writing, speaking).
Preferred Qualifications
- Requires a high school diploma or equivalent plus:
- a BS degree in a technical field and 6 years work experience or;
- a technical institute, Adult BOCES certification, AA degree in a technical field, CCI program completion at BNL plus 10 years experience or;
- a technical high school certification program (e.g. BOCES) and 11 years relevant work experience or;
- 12 years relevant work experience.
- Certification as an HVAC Controls Technician (Niagara 4 or ALC).
- Knowledge of energy management principles, conservation technologies, and HVAC systems.
- Familiarity with metering infrastructure and integration with control systems.
- Programming Automated Logic Controls (ALC), Niagara 4, and Phoenix Laboratory Control systems, Rockwell Automation ControlLogix PLCs and software Aveva Wonderware HMI and Historian Software Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) programming including Allan Bradley, ABB, and Yaskawa manufacturers AutoCAD, Microsoft Visio, Microsoft Access (report building), Microsoft SQL Server NFPA 70 (NEC) and NFPA 70E (Electrical Safety)
Qualifications
- Standing, bending, and lifting, up to 30 lbs.
- Ability to work in confined spaces.
- Ability to climb fixed and portable ladders and work at heights up to 20 feet.
- Work outdoors/cold environments.
- Work in warm environments.
- Ability to act as a primary authorized employee for Lock-out/Tag-out.
- Ability to wear proper PPE such as safety glasses, safety shoes, and hearing protection.
- Domestic travel may be required on occasion for training purposes.

Hours: 8:00 am to 4:30 pm.
