Controls Systems Technician

Key Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot electrical, instrumentation, and control systems from field devices through low-voltage control systems, including 24 VDC, 120 VAC, relay logic, control power, HMI/SCADA, solenoids, and switches.
  • Troubleshoot and repair industrial electrical power systems, including 480V systems and electrical distribution systems up to 4160V including MCCs, motors, VFDs, and breakers.
  • Support instrumentation used in biogas/RNG and digester operations including pressure transmitters, temperature transmitters, RTDs, thermocouples, flow meters, level instruments, valve positioners, pressure switches, differential pressure devices, gas detection devices, and analytical instruments.
  • Diagnose control issues including permissives, interlocks, shutdown circuits, and PLC-related faults.
  • Perform loop checks, signal verification, and field validation of control systems.
  • Support maintenance and repair of electrically driven rotating equipment, including motors, compressors, blowers, pumps, chillers, fans, skids, and auxiliary systems.
  • Use drawings (one-lines, schematics, P&IDs, loop diagrams) to troubleshoot and verify system operation.
  • Use a Megger to perform motor insulation resistance testing and assess motor condition based on test results.
  • Support commissioning, startups, outages, and major maintenance events (TARs).
  • Cook up contractors for electrical testing, switching, and major repairs.
  • Execute and improve preventive maintenance and inspection programs.
  • Review one-line diagrams, electrical distribution drawings, coordination studies, equipment documentation, and vendor manuals to support troubleshooting, equipment changes and maintenance planning.
  • Aid in developing and improving calibration procedures, instrument PMs, inspection checklists, and spare-parts recommendations.
  • Prepare electrical/I&E work scopes, parts lists, tools, isolation requirements, testing requirements, and contractor support needs for planned work.
  • Identify and resolve recurring failures to improve reliability and uptime.
  • Maintain documentation, redline, and work records with clear troubleshooting detail.
  • Ensure all work is performed safely in compliance with applicable electrical codes, company standards, and site requirements.

Qualifications

  • Active Master Electrician license or equivalent senior industrial electrical qualification required.
  • 10 + years of industrial electrical experience in processing plants. Hands-on experience with: - 24VDC / 120VAC controls - 480V motor control and MCCs - Electrical distribution up to 4160V
  • Ability to troubleshoot instrumentation and control systems.
  • Working knowledge of PLC/HMI systems.
  • Ability to read electrical drawings, P&IDs, and schematics.
  • Strong electrical safety knowledge (LOTO, arc flash, energized work)
  • Ability to document work accurately, including symptoms, observations, readings, troubleshooting steps, corrective actions, parts used, labor time, and final equipment condition.
  • Ability to travel frequently supports multiple sites, planned outages, and urgent troubleshooting.
