About the role
The Controls Engineer is responsible for supporting the design, development, and optimization of control systems across ABE manufacturing sites. This role focuses on implementing high-performance Rockwell-based architectures and leveraging Inductive Automation's Ignition SCADA platform to drive operational excellence and process stability in a continuous manufacturing environment.
Responsibilities
- Develop and document enterprise standards for controls systems, prioritizing modularity and scalability.
- Define technical scope and functional requirements for new controls projects, including legacy migrations to modern platforms.
- Lead the design and deployment of Ignition SCADA projects, focusing on real-time data visualization, alarming, and historical reporting.
- Audit existing systems to identify bottlenecks and craft improvement plans.
- Apply expertise in Continuous Process Control to optimize PID loop tuning and maintain steady-state operations for complex chemical or material flows.
- Implement advanced control strategies to reduce process variability and improve throughput.
- Act as the primary technical lead for troubleshooting controls-related breakdowns, specifically involving Rockwell (Allen-Bradley) PLCs and PowerFlex VFDs.
- Perform instrumentation troubleshooting, calibration, and rebuilding of field devices.
- Develop and implement preventive maintenance (PM) procedures for controls and instrumentation hardware.
- Manage external contractors and system integrators to ensure on-site project support is effective and compliant with company standards.
- Ensure all electrical schematics (E-Plan or AutoCAD) are updated and maintained as system changes are implemented.
- Identify and document system vulnerabilities (OT security) and develop mitigation plans.
Requirements
- Education: 4-year degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related technical discipline (or equivalent professional experience).
- Experience: Minimum 5+ years of experience in controls engineering within a manufacturing environment.
- Technical Competencies:
- Rockwell/Allen-Bradley Expertise: Advanced proficiency in Studio 5000 and RSLogix 5000. Proven ability to write complex logic for new installations and debug existing code.
- Ignition SCADA: Significant experience developing within the Inductive Automation Ignition ecosystem (Perspective or Vision modules). Knowledge of Python/Jython scripting for Ignition is highly preferred.
- Continuous Process Control: Deep understanding of process dynamics, loop tuning, and managing continuous flows/batch transitions.
- Hardware: Extensive experience with Rockwell PowerFlex VFDs, flow controllers, load cells/weighing systems, and various industrial sensors.
- Networking: Strong knowledge of industrial communication protocols, including Ethernet/IP, DeviceNet, and OT networking infrastructure (VLANs, Managed Switches).
- Database/IT: Familiarity with SQL databases (MS SQL, MySQL, or PostgreSQL) for data logging and manufacturing reporting.
- Security & Tools: Experience with industrial firewalls, OT security best practices, and version control software (e.g., AssetCentre, Copia, or Git).
Qualifications
- Successful candidates must adhere to all safety protocols and proper use of Amrize approved Personal Protection Equipment ("PPE"), including but not limited to respirators.
- Employees that are required to wear respirators must be clean shaven where the respirator seal meets the face in order to pass the qualitative and quantitative fit test.
