The Controller (GovCon Accounting/Finance) role is based in the United States and is part of a growing government contracting organization. Key responsibilities include:
- Own and execute full-cycle accounting operations including general ledger maintenance, journal entries, reconciliations, and month-end close processes.
- Lead accurate and timely financial reporting in accordance with GAAP, including preparation of monthly financial statements, variance analyses, and performance metrics.
- Oversee billing, revenue recognition, and accounts receivable processes, ensuring compliance with contract terms and alignment with project and labor data.
- Manage payroll oversight and labor cost allocation, ensuring accurate integration between timekeeping, payroll systems, and indirect cost pools.
- Supervise accounts payable, expense reimbursements, vendor payments, and disbursements while ensuring policy and federal compliance.
- Own cash management activities, including daily liquidity monitoring, cash disbursements, and banking platform administration.
- Cook up tax filings, payroll tax compliance, 1099s, W-2s, and state registrations while supporting audit readiness and documentation accuracy.
- Maintain accounting system integrity and continuously improve financial processes, controls, SOPs, and reporting workflows.
- Provide leadership to finance staff and act as escalation point for accounting, payroll, billing, and operational financial issues.
Requirements include:
- 10+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience, including leadership responsibility in a hands-on Controller or senior accounting role.
- Strong prior experience in government contracting finance, including familiarity with FAR, DCAA compliance, and federal cost accounting principles.
- Proven ability to manage full-cycle accounting operations, including close, reporting, billing, payroll, and compliance functions.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field preferred; equivalent GovCon experience may be considered; CPA is a plus.
- U.S. citizen based in the United States due to federal contracting requirements.
- Experience in consulting, professional services, or health IT environments is highly desirable.
- Familiarity with ERP and payroll systems such as Unanet and Paylocity (or equivalent platforms).
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with high attention to detail and compliance discipline.
- Able to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced, growth-oriented small business environment.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate across finance, operations, and executive leadership teams.
