Controller Location: Kansas City, MO (Hybrid/Onsite) Position Type: Full-Time Reports To: CEO / Board Treasurer Position Summary The Controller leads all financial functions of the organization, ensuring strong financial stewardship, accountability, and compliance. This position oversees accounting operations, budgeting and forecasting, financial reporting, internal controls, audit coordination, and strategic financial planning. The Controller works collaboratively with senior leadership and the Board to support mission delivery and long-term sustainability. Key Responsibilities Financial Management & Reporting Manage daily accounting operations including general ledger, payables, invoicing, receivables, payroll, and bank reconciliationsPrepare accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statementsReview and present financial reports to the Board of DirectorsManage cash flow planning and forecastingLead month-end and year-end closing processes Budgeting & Strategic Planning Lead the annual budgeting process and monitor budget performanceProvide variance analysis and financial insights to leadershipSupport long-range financial planning and scenario analysis Compliance & Controls Ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and nonprofit reporting standardsManage audit preparation and work with external auditorsDevelop and maintain strong internal control policies and proceduresOversee compliance with federal, state, and local reporting and tax requirements Grant & Fund Accounting Track and manage restricted vs. unrestricted fundsMonitor grant expenditures and prepare financial reports for grantors and funders as requiredEnsure accurate grant tracking and compliance with grant requirements and donor restrictions Leadership & Collaboration Advise the Executive Director and leadership team on financial strategy and business decisionsCoordinate with external accounting/finance consultants as neededServe as financial liaison to the Board of Directors Qualifications Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field5+ years of progressively responsible accounting/finance experienceStrong nonprofit accounting knowledge and familiarity with fund accountingProficient with QuickBooks Online and StripeExcellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills Preferred CPA or equivalent credentialExperience with audits and IRS Form 990 preparationExperience supervising staff Compensation And Benefits $80,000 - $90,000 annuallyFlexible work scheduleHybrid schedule availableGenerous paid time offBiweekly healthcare stipendProfessional development supportOpportunity to contribute to meaningful community impact in Kansas City Application Instructions Interested candidates should submit a resume and brief cover letter outlining relevant experience and interest in nonprofit financial management to Heather Nevarez, heather@kccancompost.com.
