About the role
The Controller will oversee all accounting and reporting activities, leading the team in areas such as accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and grants administration. They will ensure that SHELTER, Inc. and its affiliates have the necessary systems and procedures to support effective program management and conduct flawless audits.
Responsibilities
- Direct and enhance the monthly close process, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and timely completion of all accounting activities.
- Review and approve journal entries and account reconciliations.
- Oversee and manage all aspects of the general ledger, including fixed assets and property accounting.
- Prepare timely and accurate financial statements and assist with other reporting as needed.
- Ensure all financial reporting adheres to GAAP while proactively evolving processes to support organizational growth and scalability.
- Maintain internal controls and safeguards for assets, revenue, expenses, and program budgets.
- Cookordination and oversight of audit activity to facilitate efficient audits by providing required schedules, reconciliations, and supporting documentation and timely resolving any open items or findings.
- Work closely with program and administrative staff to support proper financial accounting.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in finance, Accounting, Economics, or a related field.
- Master of Business Administration or CPA is highly desired.
- 3+ years' experience as a Controller within the nonprofit sector required.
- Have a successful track record in nonprofit grants management, compliance, and reporting of government, corporate and foundation grants.
- 8+ Years' experience in accounting.
- Proven experience as an accounting manager, senior accounting manager or in similar roles.
- Solid experience coordinating audit activities and managing reporting, budget development and analysis, accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, payroll, and accounting for investments.
- Strong technical knowledge of U.S. GAAP and financial reporting.
- Proficient using large ERP systems, tools (Sage Intacct highly desirable) and advanced Excel capabilities to enhance accounting processes, reporting, and analytics in large and dynamic organization.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to clearly present financial information.
- Able/willing to work flexible hours.
