About the role
Controller position in the remodeling industry, responsible for payroll, financial reporting, tax compliance, HR, and benefits administration.
Responsibilities
- Process weekly payroll for office and construction employees, including direct deposit, tax liability payments, and fund transfers on a strict weekly deadline schedule.
- Review and correct daily timesheets, resolve cost-code issues, and manage mileage reimbursement.
- Administer PTO, holiday pay, loan deductions, and verify overtime calculations.
- File quarterly and annual payroll tax forms (941, 940, TWC/TWCC) and year-end W-2/W-3.
- Generate and issue customer invoices for contract draws and change orders.
- Track receivables, process payments, make deposits, and reconcile bank accounts monthly.
- Maintain weekly financial and cash-flow reporting for ownership.
- Manage construction-loan draw requirements for financed customers.
- Maintain the company P&L, direct/indirect cost tracking, and labor burden analysis.
- Submit reporting to the outside financial benchmarking partner.
- Run post-job financial reviews, including PM profit-percentage calculations.
- Manage quarterly sales tax and annual property tax filings.
- Coordinate with the outside CPA on federal income and franchise tax.
- Prepare and file 1099s, OSHA Form 300A, ACA Form 1095-B, and IRS Form 720.
- Make quarterly estimated federal tax payments.
- Manage new-hire onboarding, background checks, and benefits enrollment.
- Administer employee benefits programs and coordinate annual renewals.
- Process workers' compensation claims.
- Handle day-to-day HR and employment documentation.
- Manage annual renewals for general liability, workers' comp, auto, and EPLI coverage.
- Serve as the primary contact for banking relationships.
- Oversee vendor records, record keeping, and document retention.
Requirements
- 5+ years in a controller, senior accounting, or CFO role — construction/remodeling or another project-based industry strongly preferred.
- Hands-on payroll processing experience.
- Strong QuickBooks skills (payroll, invoicing, reporting, 1099s).
- Experience with construction management software (e.g., BuilderTrend) a plus.
- Solid grasp of payroll tax, sales tax, and small-business compliance.
- High attention to detail and comfort owning a heavy, recurring deadline calendar.
- Discretion handling sensitive financial, payroll, and HR information.
Pay
$75,000 - $100,000 per year
