About the role
A rapidly growing nonprofit is hiring its first true Controller to own accounting and financial reporting end-to-end, reporting to the COO. The organization has scaled faster than its back office, and this role exists to build the structure that keeps up with it. This is a hands-on position where you will close the books yourself, manage a team of two, and decide how the books get closed going forward.
Responsibilities

- Produce internal financial statements and board-level reporting packages
- Manage grant and restricted fund accounting, including revenue recognition and donor reporting
- Prepare grant budgets and track spend against funder requirements
- Lead the annual audit and Form 990 preparation with outside auditors
- Build and maintain the annual operating budget alongside the COO
- Oversee AP, AR, payroll coordination, and cash management
- Design and document internal controls and accounting policies as the organization grows
- Supervise and develop a team of 2
Requirements
- 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, with nonprofit exposure
- Working command of fund accounting and restricted vs. unrestricted net assets
- Track record leading an audit and a 990 through completion
- Experience in a lean department where you did the work and owned the strategy
- CPA preferred
- Experience with [accounting system] and [grant management platform]
What makes this different
The organization is in a genuine growth phase. Systems, processes, and reporting cadence are open for you to shape. If you want a seat where your fingerprints show up on how the finance function actually runs, this is that seat.
