Controller

About the role
The Controller provides leadership and coordination of the agency’s accounting operations, reporting directly to the Director of Finance. This position ensures compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and regularly reviews internal control procedures related to the receipt and disbursement of funds. The Controller interacts with program participants and must be familiar with the Residential Service Guidelines issued by the Developmental Disabilities Administration, upholding the agency’s mission to maximize clients’ quality of life.
Responsibilities
- Manage and direct the accounting functions of the organization.
- Remain current on GAAP and government reporting requirements; advise staff on accounting questions and issues.
- Prepare financial documents and accounting for the annual audit; serve as the primary agency contact for external audits.
- Ensure agency funds, accounts, bank statements, and investment reports are reviewed and reconciled.
- Ensure timely payment of debts and obligations; track agency costs for current financial oversight.
- Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll responsibilities, including tax deposits and reports.
- Maintain corporate registrations with city, county, and state entities.
- Prepare, analyze, and distribute reports such as Unemployment Insurance, Industrial Insurance, Federal Tax Reports, and others as required.
- Ensure reporting compliance with funding entities, including HUD and the Department of Commerce.
- Compile reports and monitor performance of the Inclusion Housing portfolio.
- Direct and oversee payroll, including tax fund deposits, PTO updates, and retirement plan payments.
- Monitor electronic timekeeping, payroll processing, and PTO tracking.
- Monitor the use of ISS hours against contracted hours; prepare settlement reports for the CEO and Board of Directors.
- Maintain and update PTO records following each payroll cycle.
- Prepare and balance periodic and statistical reports; reconcile reports against bank statements and pay summaries.
- Provide the Director of Finance with data for monthly financial reports and assist with period-end reporting.
- Supervise assigned staff, including annual reviews, time card compliance, performance management, skill development, recruitment, and retention.
- Participate in administrative staff meetings, attend seminars, and complete annual training requirements.
- Perform other duties assigned by the Director of Finance and Chief Executive Officer.
Requirements
- At least 21 years of age.
- A Master’s degree in business, accounting, or a related field from a recognized college or university, or a Bachelor’s degree with four years of related work experience (bookkeeping and/or accounting).
- CMA or CPA certification preferred.
- At least one year of experience in a relevant social services field.
- Familiarity with Fund Accounting Software or other financial software.
- If applicable, a Washington State Driver’s license, current vehicle insurance, and eligibility for coverage under Alpha’s automobile insurance plan based on driving record.
- Background inquiry clearance from an authorized state agency.

- Advanced knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
- Advanced knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services, including needs assessment and service evaluation.
- Intermediate knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures, such as word processing, file management, and office systems.
- Ability to determine how systems should work and how changes in conditions or operations may affect outcomes.
- Demonstrated ability to identify complex problems, evaluate options, and implement solutions.
- Ability to identify developmental needs of others and coach or mentor staff to improve knowledge or skills.
- Ability to provide guidance and direction to subordinates, including setting performance standards and monitoring performance.
- Ability to use relevant information and judgment to ensure compliance with laws, regulations, or standards.
Pay
Starting salary: $107,120. Salary scale: $107,120 – $145,600.
