About the role

The Control Systems Specialist/Engineer provides control system development and support for Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) and Human Machine Interface (HMI) systems. This role involves commissioning new facilities and troubleshooting existing systems. The position is safety-sensitive and subject to DOT and Pipeline Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) regulations.

The incumbent works under limited supervision, performing a full range of responsibilities within the Controls Technology group. This role requires handling anomalies regularly and applying advanced principles, theories, and concepts in the discipline, along with a working knowledge of related fields.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop industrial control system solutions, including PLC and HMI programs, for new construction, maintenance projects, or operational requests.
  • Provide assistance and analysis regarding industrial control systems to commercial, operations, and engineering teams.
  • Investigate new technologies and methods to reduce hardware costs and labor expenses related to automation.
  • Ensure compliance with company cybersecurity efforts through evaluation, configuration, and deployment of secure solutions for Operational Technology (OT) devices.
  • Provide automation solution estimates to project managers, facility engineers, and others.
  • Deliver creative engineered designs for PLC programming and provide project management and oversight for assigned projects, including expansion, regulatory, and modification projects.
  • Follow Project Life Cycle and OMS to ensure projects meet quality, cost, and schedule objectives.
  • Develop and present training for Operations on new or specialized equipment installed as part of project deployment.
  • Provide Tier 2 support for Operations technicians, including technical support for control systems, instrumentation, and equipment.
  • Offer programming, commissioning, and troubleshooting support for loading rack electronic presets (Accuload) and flow computer equipment (Omni).
  • Provide commissioning and troubleshooting assistance for network, serial, and wireless communication systems used in facility operations.
  • Perform duties that may include Department of Transportation (DOT) covered functions, such as operations, maintenance, or emergency response on pipelines. Immediate response to hazardous conditions is required to prevent injury or property damage.

Requirements

  • Technical or engineering degree preferred; substantial direct experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • 3–5 years of related work experience preferred.
  • On-call support with rotating shifts.
  • Up to 30% travel may be required.
  • Valid driver’s license may be required for company vehicle use.

Skills

Knowledge of:

  • PLC and HMI platforms.
  • Computer systems used in OT/ICS environments, including software management, industrial communication protocols, common programming languages, and database configuration.

Ability to:

  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing in English.
  • Work under time pressure, tight deadlines, and interruptions.
  • Follow instructions or standard procedures.
  • Organize and analyze information to identify solutions from a range of alternatives.
  • Deal with complex issues requiring substantial analysis or independent judgment.

  • Occasional exposure to outdoor weather conditions, dust, fumes, and gases.
  • Constant repetitive motion.

Pay

Expected salary range: $100,000 – $150,000 per year.
