About the role

The Operations Specialist Trainee (OST) at SRP is a Power Plant Control Room Operator Trainee. The OST will start as an outside (auxiliary) Operator during training. Previous experience as a power generation plant control room operator or control room operator trainee is highly preferred.

The OST position is responsible for the successful completion of the OST curriculum and promotion to the Operator Specialist classification. This is a training position for a specified length of time and is not a position that an O&M 3 operator can be upgraded to.

Responsibilities

• Learn the facility-specific operation of coal, natural gas, and fuel oil-fired steam generating units, steam turbine generators, simple cycle gas turbines, combined cycle units, conventional and pumped storage hydro units, internal combustion engine units, solar-powered units, wind-powered units, and fuel cell-powered units, along with their related equipment.
• Operate and monitor equipment and auxiliaries by remote control from the control room and throughout the facility using Distributed Control Systems, gauges, instruments, and communication facilities.
• Coordinate and maintain unit availability with AGC, including preparation and planning for load reductions/increases based on system demands.
• Operate units within environmental and SRP guidelines.
• Direct the work of other classifications and assist as directed in the completion of tasks.
• Evaluate plant processes and issue clearances as needed, requiring thorough knowledge of clearance procedures.
• Train personnel in other classifications on the proper operation of plant equipment, controls, and procedures.
• Perform regular O&M duties at the site, including housing areas, civil works, roadways, water or sewer systems, etc.

Training Objectives

The training objective is the successful completion of all training curriculum defined by the Operations Specialist Trainee program. All testing and Job Performance Measures must be completed successfully. Training must be completed within two years from the date of promotion, though this timeline may vary with the Plant Manager’s agreement due to work demands. Skills training will adapt to meet the needs of the facility, and mandatory regulatory training will comply with SRP policy.

Upon completion of the OST curriculum, progression to the Operator Specialist classification is available without waiting for an opening at the current facility.

Requirements

• Must complete at least one year as O&M Specialist III, Operations, or demonstrate equivalent skills and knowledge.
• High school diploma, GED, or equivalent is required.
• Must possess a valid Arizona driver’s license.
• Appropriate respirator medical certification, fit test, and training required.
• Must pass a Physical Agility Test.
• Must pass a Trades Assessment.
• Must comply with SRP’s drug/alcohol policy, which prohibits the use of marijuana, even if legal in Arizona, due to federal regulations.
