Control Room Operator

About the role

This position is a Control Room Operator (CRO) responsible for coordinating all on-shift operations at a combined cycle generating facility. The role requires a Massachusetts 2nd Class Engineers license and involves safe operation of plant equipment across various scenarios, including cold plant startup and emergency operations. The incumbent will use Distributive Control System (DCS) computers for equipment operation and monitoring, troubleshoot issues, and demonstrate strong leadership and decision-making skills.

Responsibilities

• Operate and maintain a combined cycle generating facility and all associated auxiliary and support equipment with minimal guidance, making decisions based on plant procedures, safety, and environmental regulations.
• Operate the plant via a remote Distributed Control System (DCS) and locally via PLC panel interfaces when necessary.
• Set priorities for daily work and communicate plant issues to the O&M Manager and/or Facility Manager.
• Monitor and record equipment data such as temperature, vibration, pressure, and fluid levels to verify operating conditions.
• Visually inspect and listen to equipment to detect malfunctions or maintenance needs.
• Provide detailed shift turnover reports to fellow CROs.
• Perform water chemistry analysis on HRSG, auxiliary boiler, and cooling tower systems, ensuring proper control ranges and making adjustments as needed.
• Operate the demineralized water system in accordance with OEM and plant procedures.
• Support the computerized maintenance management system by entering data, documenting maintenance actions, and managing spare parts.
• Maintain equipment by replacing components such as valves, gaskets, and gauges, and performing lubrication tasks.
• Operate valves and circuit breakers for system operation and isolation.
• Assist in capital projects, troubleshoot programmable logic controllers (PLCs), and support instrumentation and electrical repairs.
• Identify and resolve Continuous Emissions Monitoring System (CEMS) issues, including calibrations and gas bottle changeouts.
• Maintain plant cleanliness, perform housekeeping duties, and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
• Report accidents, incidents, near misses, and hazards within 24 hours and promote a culture of safety and accountability.
• Develop and provide input on Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to improve plant efficiency, reliability, and safety.
• Operate heavy equipment such as manlifts and forklifts, and handle bulk chemical transfers.
• Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations and plant procedures.

Requirements

• High School Diploma, degree from a technical/vocational school, military service, or equivalent.
• Massachusetts 2nd Class Engineers license required.
• Four to six years of related power generation combined-cycle experience and/or training, or a combination of experience and education.

Skills

• Mechanical, instrumentation, and electrical equipment knowledge.
• Proficiency in operating Distributive Control Systems (DCS) and PLC panel interfaces.
• Experience with Microsoft Office products and RedTag PRO for Lockout Tagout procedures.
• Ability to perform chemical analysis and control for steam, cooling, and condensate systems.
• Strong troubleshooting, diagnosis, and decision-making skills, especially in emergency situations.
• Knowledge of gas turbine power plant maintenance and operations.
• Familiarity with computerized maintenance management systems and documentation.
• Ability to operate welding and cutting equipment and perform metal fabrication.
• Proficiency in using test equipment such as Fluke meters for calibration and repair.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to walk, reach, climb, stoop, and lift up to 50 pounds.
• Capable of operating heavy equipment such as manlifts and forklifts.

Pay

Annual salary range: $115,000 - $130,000 based on experience and skills.
