Control and Automation Engineer
About the Role
Voxel is seeking a Control and Automation Engineer to develop advanced manufacturing equipment and processes for Pulsed Electrochemical Machining (PECM), a cutting-edge process used to machine specialty metal alloys for aerospace, energy, medical, semiconductor, and other high-value applications. This role sits at the intersection of materials science, electrochemistry, and electrical, mechanical, chemical, and software engineering. You will collaborate closely with a multidisciplinary team to create innovative solutions for complex manufacturing challenges.
As a small business, the demands of this role shift with the phase of work. You will take full ownership of projects, transitioning between software development, process optimization, hands-on panel building, equipment installation, and robot commissioning as needed.
Responsibilities
- Write software programs and state machines using Structured Text, Python, and SQL, predominantly in Beckhoff TwinCAT, to control PECM equipment, including multi-axis control, safety logic, database transactions, and sequencing with multiple elements.
- Develop robot code, primarily in Kuka Robot Language, to automate industrial robots.
- Leverage AI tools to support software development, debugging, and documentation.
- Design, wire, and troubleshoot industrial control cabinets and electrical systems.
- Take hands-on ownership of industrial automation hardware, including designing analog circuitry, managing signal noise, and integrating sensors into physical control systems.
- Provide troubleshooting support for production equipment, diagnosing and resolving electrical, mechanical, and software issues to minimize downtime.
- Integrate third-party hardware such as metrology equipment, sensors, and instrumentation into the control architecture.
- Assist in creating budgets and timelines for the controls and electrical aspects of projects.
- Maintain software records, backups, and compliance with Voxel’s quality control requirements.
Requirements
- BS/MS/PhD in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field.
- 3–10+ years of relevant experience in automation, controls, or equipment development.
- Experience with industrial electrical systems and panel design.
- Proficiency with sensors, instrumentation, and data acquisition.
- Programming experience for automation (PLC, structured text, or similar).
- Ability to work hands-on with hardware, including wiring, debugging, and system integration.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently.
- Must be a U.S. person (U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident) due to export control laws.

Note: Pure software-only or PLC-only applicants without experience in physical industrial hardware and control cabinets are not a fit. Familiarity with Beckhoff TwinCAT is preferred but not required if you have a strong grasp of structured text, state machines, and industrial programming practices.
