Content Specialist (McBurney YMCA)

About the role

Under the supervision of the Program Director, the Content Specialist selects and manages program content and curricula for up to three COMPASS programs. The role involves overseeing program implementation, coaching staff, and enhancing program quality through observation and supervision.

Responsibilities

• Select and manage content across all required program areas, including creating new curricula and lesson plans as needed.
• Oversee lesson plan implementation and support Activity Specialists, Group Leaders, and Inclusion Specialists to ensure effective delivery.
• Coach staff by providing targeted strategies for lesson facilitation, classroom management, and behavior support.
• Review content to ensure alignment with Y Afterschool Programs’ high-quality standards.
• Provide professional development for program staff to improve overall program quality.
• Monitor and evaluate program activities to maintain a safe, positive environment for youth development.
• Assist participants in improving comprehension, retention, and academic skills in designated areas.
• Help participants develop study skills for academic success and provide encouragement or alternative explanations as needed.
• Collaborate with the Program Director and school staff to align activities with academic expectations.
• Foster motivation and positive attitudes toward learning by acknowledging student efforts and achievements.
• Work cooperatively with Afterschool staff, teachers, and other programs to promote an inclusive, welcoming environment.
• Maintain a strength-based, youth-focused atmosphere sensitive to participants with learning, emotional, or behavioral differences.
• Maintain accurate program documentation, including sign-in/sign-out forms, behavior reports, and incident reports.
• Serve as a positive role model and communicate the YMCA’s core values and program goals to participants and caregivers.
• Participate in training sessions, meetings, and special events.
• Adhere to OCFS, DOH, YMCA, school partner, and funder standards and regulations.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Education or a related field (required). Master’s Degree (preferred).
• Minimum of two years of experience working with children under 13.
• Minimum of one year of experience in a supervisory role, including content management, staff supervision, training, and coaching.
• Experience developing education-based curriculum and lesson plans.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
