About the role

The Content Specialist is a part-time position at the COMPASS program responsible for selecting and managing program content in required content areas. The role involves overseeing and supporting program staff through observations, coaching, training, and professional development to ensure program quality. The Content Specialist supports afterschool and summer camp Activity Specialists and group leaders in creating age-appropriate, weekly activity plans and resources aligned with Social Emotional Learning (SEL), STEM, Reading, and Math curricula used by the school where the COMPASS program is based. They ensure all activities are fun, inclusive, and designed to foster creativity, leadership, and learning for youth in grades K-5.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in HSVS, DYCD trainings, and professional development, completing 30 hours of required OCFS trainings.
  • Maintains a binder and/or online SharePoint of all activity plans and resources.
  • Assists in ordering, maintaining, and keeping inventory of after-school supplies.
  • Develops weekly and monthly activity plans aligned with the program theme and school SEL, STEM, Math, and Literacy/Reading curricula.
  • Supports Activity Specialists and Group Leaders in creating engaging and hands-on activity plans.
  • Ensures bulletin boards reflect activities and themes implemented in the after-school and summer camp program, updating them monthly.
  • Provides training and coaching to Activity Specialists and Group Leaders on lesson and activity delivery and implementation.
  • Offers real-time support to staff during program hours and assists with classroom set-up and activities as needed.
  • Provides office hours and at least three hours of preparation time to Activity Specialists and Group Leaders to complete activity and lesson plans.
  • Assists the Program Director and Assistant Director with planning special events, trips, showcases, and themes throughout the year.
  • Observes activities and classes to ensure proper implementation and provides feedback to Activity Specialists and Group Leaders.
  • Accompanies youth on cultural and recreational field trips.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned, consistent with the scope, responsibilities, and level of the position, and in compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and organizational policies.

Requirements

  • Minimum Education: Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or equivalent (required).
  • Preferred Education: Master’s Degree (preferred).
  • Experience: Must be a NYC School Teacher working with children during the school year.
