About the Role

Provides multi-discipline engineering teams with strong technical and project leadership within a discipline, engineering section, or for major engineering projects. Applies advanced knowledge and technical skills to solve complex engineering problems or plan and coordinate larger-scale projects. Offers expert technical consultation and assessment on engineering issues, serving as a management consultant for complex problems. Controls technical, financial, and service commitments to internal or external customers. May perform independent research to develop innovative and cost-effective engineering solutions.

The candidate will provide technical support for Dominion Energy Electric Transmission field operations, focusing on transformers, switches, breakers, voltage regulators, circuit breakers, and instrument transformers—from managing vendor relationships to operation, decommissioning, and root cause analyses (RCA). As novel challenges arise, the candidate will develop the necessary knowledge base and engineering capabilities to address them.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain relationships with equipment suppliers, ensuring production capacity meets Dominion Energy’s requirements and mitigating supplier lock-in.
  • Develop and document design requirements for major substation equipment, conducting annual reviews.
  • Perform design reviews and factory acceptance tests (FATs) for equipment in production with domestic and international suppliers.
  • Analyze and support the qualification of new equipment suppliers.
  • Support equipment procurement processes.
  • Assist Dominion field organizations with:
    • Responses to equipment emergencies.
    • Material specification.
    • Design validation and innovation.
    • Root cause analysis (RCAs) of failure events.
    • Commissioning and decommissioning.
    • Developing training and guidelines for field organizations’ maintenance and response to system events.
  • Support the development and demonstration of leading-edge tools, technologies, and applications to maintain Dominion’s industry leadership.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of relevant engineering experience. An Engineering PhD can substitute for up to 5 years of experience based on approved research work.
  • In-depth knowledge of engineering theories, principles, and practices for a broad range of assignments.
  • Knowledge of business, financial, and contractual matters.
  • Recognized as an expert by peers and management, providing technical consultation to engineers and leadership.
  • Proficiency in advanced engineering techniques and project management.
  • Strong technical and organizational leadership skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including technical writing.
  • Advanced proficiency in computer applications and engineering software (e.g., Excel, SAP).
  • Proven decision-making and analytical problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to interpret codes, regulations, and practices.
  • Ability to process information quickly and manage multiple tasks effectively.
  • Equally effective working independently or in a team environment.

Qualifications

For placement in a Consulting Engineer title, candidates must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an ABET-accredited program.
  • Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an institution outside the U.S. accredited under the Washington Accord as a full signatory.
  • Possess a 4-year non-ABET-accredited degree in Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Math, or Engineering Technology, plus a post-graduate Engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same discipline is ABET-accredited.
  • Hold or have previously held a valid U.S. Professional Engineer license.

Preferred disciplines: Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Manufacturing Engineering.

5+ years of experience in manufacturing, with knowledge of engineering principles and practices in electric power systems, is preferred. Working knowledge of SAP software is also preferred.

Pay

Expected hiring base salary range: $116,300 – $151,100. The actual salary offered may vary based on qualifications, skills, experience, and work location.
