About the Role

We are seeking a highly motivated Consultant Medical Oncologist with an interest in Lung Cancer to join our well-integrated team. This role involves providing tertiary-level oncology care in a teaching hospital’s cancer centre and peripheral clinics, including potential services at NCCC-Carlisle. The post offers opportunities for teaching, education, research, and audit. Part-time applications are welcome, and flexible working arrangements will be considered where possible.

Responsibilities

• Provide oncology advice to multidisciplinary teams (MDTs) and patients with lung cancers.
• Prescribe and supervise chemotherapy.
• Cover general oncological emergencies and provide advice to non-specialist teams managing patients with cancer, in and out of hours.
• Manage outpatient clinics, day units, and wards.
• Participate in clinical governance processes, including reporting into the Trust mortality database.
• Engage with administrative electronic systems to deliver patient care.
• Contribute to the active research programme, with opportunities for collaboration with the Sir Bobby Robson Unit, late-phase research teams, and Newcastle University.
• Develop teaching skills, including bedside and clinical teaching for undergraduate students, and supervision of junior doctors and trainees.
• Work flexibly, including potential evening or weekend shifts, to meet patient needs.

Requirements

Education and Qualifications

• Essential:
  • Primary Medical Qualification.
  • Full GMC Registration.
  • Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register (or eligibility within 6 months of the Appointments Committee).
• Desirable:
  • Higher Degree.
  • Special skills training in the specialty.

Clinical Experience

• Essential:
  • Evidence of experience in the specialty.
  • Substantial commitment to the specialty.
  • Ability to offer expert clinical opinions within the specialty.
  • Ability to take independent responsibility for clinical care in a tertiary centre.

Management and Administration

• Essential:
  • Involvement in management and project leadership within the specialty.
  • Experience in authoring or reviewing clinical guidelines.
  • Understanding of Clinical Governance.
• Desirable:
  • Administrative experience and understanding of management goals.
  • Evidence of leadership or project management.
  • Experience implementing change or new technologies.

Teaching

• Essential:
  • Experience supervising junior medical staff.
  • Participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
  • Ability to teach clinical, technical, or practical skills.
• Desirable:
  • Attendance at courses to develop teaching skills.
  • Postgraduate qualification in medical education.

Research

• Essential:
  • Evidence of involvement in and understanding of research methodology.
  • Publication of research findings or critical review of literature.
  • Publications in the last five years.
• Desirable:
  • Higher degree.

Audit

• Essential:
  • Evidence of participation in audit.
• Desirable:
  • Evidence of changing practice as a result of audit.
  • Evidence of revisiting audit to assess improvement.
