About the role

As a Consultant Engineer Intern, you will help clients maintain continuity in their business operations by evaluating risk and reward, calculating potential disaster, and anticipating ways to protect against nature’s greatest forces.

This internship offers a unique opportunity to work with a dynamic, culturally diverse group of employees across more than 100 countries. You will gain hands-on experience through field visits, office work, and special projects, deepening your practical engineering knowledge while contributing to FM’s mission of loss prevention and risk mitigation.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in FM training to learn the fundamentals of building construction, occupancy, protection, and exposures (COPE) as they relate to risk assessment and mitigation.
  • Learn the fundamentals of fire protection systems.
  • Accompany FM Field Engineers during visits to commercial properties of varying complexity to perform “hands-on” site assessments, including roof evaluations.
  • Review mechanical and electrical equipment operation, installation, maintenance, and loss potential hazards.
  • Communicate basic recommendations and engineering solutions to ensure client understanding and agreement for risk improvement.
  • Document risk analysis of locations visited.
  • Lead and deliver a technical project assigned by FM Global Supervisors.
  • Shadow professionals in various departments to gain a holistic understanding of the company and engineering team.
  • Visit other FM locations, such as corporate offices and the research campus.
  • Participate in professional development events with other interns.

Qualifications

  • Plan to graduate with a bachelor’s degree in engineering (civil, chemical, mechanical, electrical, etc.) or fire protection.
  • Ability to work full-time during the summer internship.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Good analytical, organizational, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills.
  • Efficient time management skills.
  • Naturally inquisitive with the ability to undertake and deliver projects with minimal supervision.
  • Solid technical aptitude, including diverse knowledge of engineering principles.
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle throughout the internship.
  • Ability to commute to Malvern, Pennsylvania, throughout the internship.
  • Physical ability to climb ladders, lift more than 25 lbs., balance, and work at elevated heights.
  • Proficient in MS Office products.
