Consultant, Brokerage Casualty Underwriting - E&S/Specialty

In this role, you’ll underwrite individual risks for acceptability, pricing, coverage, terms, and conditions, focusing on complex accounts within the Excess & Surplus/Specialty (E&S/S) lines. You’ll exercise a high level of authority and judgment, balancing customer needs with business goals in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
Responsibilities
- Research and develop new classes of business, including market viability, forms, endorsements, manuals, and reinsurance options.
- Partner with Actuarial, Finance, and Claims teams to assess profitability, pricing, and loss potential for large, complex accounts.
- Underwrite individual risks with technical expertise, analyzing exposures, determining premiums, and crafting endorsements/exclusions, including manuscript wording.
- Place reinsurance for accounts within department guidelines and maintain strong relationships with reinsurers.
- Achieve production and loss ratio goals through broker management, analyzing premium/loss results, and recommending corrective actions.
- Handle policy maintenance, mid-term requests, endorsements, and loss control compliance, including follow-up on outstanding information.
- Review claim activity and take appropriate action to mitigate risks.
- Foster positive relationships with brokers through frequent contact, travel, and marketing initiatives.
- Resolve complex technical questions and mentor underwriters at all levels.
- Teach classes to build technical underwriting knowledge for brokers, SSU students, and other underwriters.
- Assist the manager with department strategies, employee coaching, and development.
- Approve referrals exceeding the authority of lower-level underwriters.
Qualifications
- Undergraduate degree preferred; equivalent work experience considered in lieu of a degree.
- Completion of general insurance courses (e.g., CPCU, CIC, AU, ARM, CPIW, CWIS, ASLI) is preferred.
- Eight years of Commercial Lines (CL) underwriting experience, handling large or complex accounts; excess & surplus lines experience preferred.
Skills
- Expertise in complex CL underwriting policies, practices, and procedures, including insurance law and underwriting/marketing principles.
- Knowledge of Standard Bureau Rating plans, catastrophe management, alternative rating methods, and pricing theory.
- Understanding of Treaty & Facultative reinsurance, regulatory issues, wholesale broker systems, and market conditions.
- Strong leadership, relationship-building, and mentoring abilities.
- High level of authority and judgment with minimal direction.

Pay
National salary range: $104,000–$194,000. Expected starting salary range: $104,000–$156,000. Placement within the range depends on skills, education, experience, scope/complexity of the role, and market labor costs.
Schedule
- Exempt (not eligible for overtime).
- Normal office environment with extended/non-standard hours based on project and customer deliverables.
- Travel required.
