About the role

The Superintendent manages and oversees projects, providing direction and mentoring to project Foremen and crews. This role ensures safety, quality, productivity, and profitability while maintaining strong relationships with crews, subcontractors, customers, and engineers to meet or exceed customer requirements.

Physical and Environmental Factors

  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to walk, sit, stand, bend, twist, stoop, push, pull, carry, and lift as needed.
  • Ability to coordinate eyes, hands, feet, and limbs for skilled movement.
  • 100% travel, with extended periods away from home.

Responsibilities

  • Meet or exceed all safety, quality, and productivity requirements for assigned projects.
  • Lead, direct, and mentor Foremen and crews to ensure on-time project completion while meeting financial and non-financial objectives.
  • Manage staffing, including recruiting, retention, and career advancement for existing employees.
  • Handle employee relations, including recognition, discipline, and performance evaluations.
  • Recruit and recommend subcontractors for approval.
  • Initiate and recommend training and cross-training for personnel to develop expertise in their field.
  • Plan and schedule projects, taking action to meet or beat deadlines.
  • Monitor project performance for productivity, safety, and quality, resolving issues as needed.
  • Review and approve daily crew time, time reports, invoices, purchase orders, and other required paperwork.
  • Perform daily preventative maintenance on construction equipment and report issues to the Fleet Manager.
  • Report weekly equipment hours, miles, and other relevant information to the Fleet Manager.
  • Understand project contracts and abide by company, manufacturer, OSHA, and industry safety standards.
  • Establish positive working relationships with crews, customers, and subcontractors.
  • Maintain a daily log of project events.
  • Manage documents and elevate change orders for approval in a timely manner.
  • Approve subcontractors’ units, production, quality, accuracy, and inventory.
  • Ensure accurate redlines/as-builts, production footage, and subcontractor management to keep projects on schedule and within budget.
  • Pre-plan mobilization of crews, equipment, subcontractors, materials, and other project-related items.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Five years of supervisory experience in a utility construction setting.
  • Demonstrated field experience with digging operations in city and rural areas around utilities.
  • Experience operating equipment such as backhoe/loader, excavator, cable plow, and compact track loader, including various attachments.
  • Valid Driver’s License; Class A CDL preferred.
  • Ability to pass pre-employment screenings.
  • Ability to motivate, mentor, and lead teams.
  • Strong teamwork skills and ability to participate on a crew.
  • Willingness to embrace new technologies.
  • Positive attitude and strong work ethic.
  • Computer literacy, including experience with Microsoft and Google G Suite.
  • Ability to read, comprehend, and prepare project-related work reports.
  • Ability to handle stressful situations and workloads.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and planning skills.
  • Ability to multitask effectively.
