The Construction Safety Specialist – Self Perform CSA will serve as the dedicated safety resource for Tesla’s in-house (self-perform) civil, structural, and architectural construction teams. This role is responsible for ensuring that CSA work activities are performed safely and in compliance with OSHA, ACI, AISC, and all applicable federal, state, and local regulations. The Construction Safety Specialist will partner closely with CSA superintendents, foremen, and craft workers to build a world-class CSA work culture through field presence, hazard recognition, coaching, training, AI utilization, and program development and implementation.
What You'll Do
- Oversight of self-performed CSA work safety, including but not limited to excavation, trenching, grading, utility installation, masonry and foundation activities, ensuring compliance with OSHA 29 CFR 1926 Subpart P
- Oversight of safety for work including metal panels, interior framing, drywall, flooring, and finish trades ensuring compliance with fall protection, access planning, and hazard controls
- Serve as Tesla’s safety resource for self-perform CSA crews, providing real-time guidance on OSHA and Tesla-specific CSA safety requirements
- Enforcement of safety measures for silica-generating tasks, fall hazards, chemical exposures, and interior construction activities, including dust control, hot work safety, material handling, and multi-trade coordination to mitigate respiratory, fall, and fire risks
- Conduct project walks focused on safe work practices; perform coaching conversations with workers when corrections are required
- Review Pre-Work Risk Assessments (PWRAs), Pre-Task Plans (PTPs) and Method of Procedures (MOPs) to ensure tasks, hazards, and mitigations are in alignment with the work being performed in the field
- Present material and information to the Tesla construction management team and self-perform leadership during safety meetings, toolbox talks, and stand-downs and be a resource to the management team for guidance, assistance and directions regarding EHS requirements
Qualifications
- Degree in Occupational Health and Safety preferred, or equivalent experience
- 3-5 years of hands-on experience building high-tech infrastructure and operational facilities (Automotive, tool/equipment installation, semiconductor, solar, battery, etc.)
- CSP or CHST preferred
- Demonstrated experience developing and managing excavation safety programs, fall protection plans, critical lift plans, scaffold programs, and hot work permit programs
- Background in heavy civil, structural steel, concrete, masonry, roofing, and building envelope construction methods and associated hazards
- Working knowledge of OSHA, UBC, ISO, ANSI, NFPA, NEC, GB, codes
- Ability to read and interpret civil site plans, structural drawings, architectural plans, and construction specifications
