The Construction Safety Specialist – Self Perform Mechanical will serve as the dedicated safety resource for Tesla’s in-house (self-perform) mechanical construction team. This role is responsible for ensuring that mechanical work activities are performed safely and in compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations. The Construction Safety Specialist will partner closely with mechanical superintendents, foremen, and craft to build a world-class mechanical work culture through field presence, hazard recognition, coaching, training, AI utilization, and program development and implementation.

Responsibilities

  • Provide dedicated safety oversight of self-perform mechanical work activities including but not limited to process piping fabrication and installation, HVAC system fabrication and installations, utility piping, welding, brazing, soldering, threading, grooving, and flange-up work
  • Serve as Tesla’s safety resource for self-perform mechanical crews, providing real-time guidance on OSHA and Tesla-specific mechanical safety requirements
  • Review and validate pressure testing procedures and safety plans for hydrostatic and pneumatic testing of piping systems, ensuring proper barricading, pressure relief, personnel exclusion zones, and test medium requirements are established
  • Monitor safe rigging and material handling practices for heavy mechanical lifts including pipe spools, valves, mechanical equipment, air handling units, chillers, boilers, cooling towers, and rooftop units, ensuring compliance with Tesla’s critical lift program
  • Conduct project walks focused on safe work practices; perform coaching conversations with workers when corrections are required
  • Review Pre-Work Risk Assessments (PWRAs), Pre-Task Plans (PTPs) and Method of Procedures (MOPs) to ensure tasks, hazards, and mitigations are in alignment with the work being performed in the field
  • Present material and information to the Tesla construction management team and self-perform leadership during safety meetings, toolbox talks, and stand-downs and be a resource to the management team for guidance, assistance and directions regarding EHS requirements

Requirements

  • 3-5 years of hands-on experience building high-tech infrastructure and operational facilities (Automotive, tool/equipment installation, semiconductor, solar, battery, etc.)
  • CSP or CHST preferred
  • Demonstrated experience developing and managing fall protection plans and critical lift plans
  • Background in electrical power distribution systems including medium/high voltage switchgear, transformers, bus duct, MCCs, panelboards, and temporary power systems
  • Working knowledge of OSHA, UBC, ISO, ANSI, NFPA, ASME, ASHRAE, GB, codes
  • Ability to read and interpret piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), isometric drawings, mechanical plans, and construction drawings
