About the role

We are seeking an experienced Health and Safety (H&S) Specialist, H&S Engineer, or H&S Manager to support AWS Data Center Planning and Delivery (DCPD) programs. In this role, you will partner with internal DCPD teams—including Real Estate, Due Diligence, Permitting, Energy, Water, Pre-Construction, Construction, Commissioning, Security, and Procurement—to achieve health and safety goals and enhance our safety culture. Externally, you will engage with General Contractors and AWS Suppliers to clarify business expectations for H&S and drive continuous improvement in contracted services. This position reports to H&S Program Specialists within your assigned region (Americas, Europe Middle East Africa, or Asia Pacific/Japan China).

Responsibilities

  • Influence program development, framework, and strategy while deploying H&S programs covering leadership, planning, support, operational controls, continuous improvement, performance management, jurisdictional compliance, and AWS Safety Management Program (SMP) requirements.
  • Review due diligence risk assessments with Real Estate, Pre-Construction, and Construction teams to ensure alignment with AWS H&S management program requirements.
  • Coordinate with DCPD managers to prioritize H&S in planning and execution across all project phases.
  • Ensure and monitor General Contractors’ and AWS deployment vendors’ compliance with onboarding requirements in Avetta.
  • Conduct campus H&S kickoff sessions and review Construction Safety Management Plans from General Contractors and AWS deployment vendors.
  • Document data and anecdotes in standard reporting tools (e.g., Weekly Business Reviews, Monthly Project Reviews) for DCPD and H&S leadership teams.
  • Manage third-party/internal H&S resources on DCPD projects, including participation in weekly and monthly reviews.
  • Identify improvement opportunities at project(s) and collaborate with the Data Center Health and Safety (DCHS) Operational Team on regional issues affecting construction/operations handover phases.
  • Audit projects using the mental model: “Do you have a process, and are you following it?” Analyze data (leading and lagging indicators) for trends, risks, and opportunities, reporting findings at project and regional levels.
  • Conduct regular site visits with H&S third-party resources, construction managers, and DCHS Operational teams.
  • Host project- and regional-specific H&S kickoff sessions and annual performance review sessions for contractors and internal teams.

A day in the life

This is a field-based role requiring on-site presence at construction and retrofit projects in the greater Washington DC area five days a week. Occasional domestic travel may be required. You will collaborate with a global network of H&S professionals, including program specialists, regional safety managers, and operational teams. Using data and anecdotes, you will drive internal customers to manage H&S risks, serving as an escalation path for issue resolution and overseeing site-based H&S team members or consultants. Your role involves applying jurisdictional requirements, regional best practices, and cultural norms to improve DCPD H&S activities by demonstrating solutions and developing DCPD competencies. Strong communication skills—verbal, written, and public speaking—are essential. You will deploy mechanisms to manage H&S while fostering ownership within the business, requiring diplomacy, patience, and tact to build trust and advise DCPD teams.
