About the role

Please join us at MTS as a Flagperson (Construction Safety). This role offers part-time, temporary employment supporting a 24/7 transit operation. Full schedule flexibility is required, including nights, weekends, holidays, and on-call assignments. Hours are not guaranteed and may vary based on operational needs. The role is ideal for those who are dependable, flexible, and comfortable in a fast-paced, safety-sensitive environment.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts job briefings prior to work activity and conducts follow-up briefings any time new workers enter the job site, or if there is a change in working conditions or procedures.
  • Maintains vigilance over approaching trains and alerts work crews to clear the track of personnel and equipment.
  • Sets up and removes safety equipment such as discs, flags, and whistles.
  • Communicates with train operators using hand-held two-way radios and other signaling devices.
  • Performs routine maintenance tasks like washing non-revenue vehicles.
  • Coordinates with other crew members to ensure safe train operations.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of MTS policies and regulations.
  • Ability to read, understand, and apply written instructions, MTS policies, regulations, and union labor contracts.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to multi-task.
  • Good organizational and communication skills.
  • Physical stamina and ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds unaided.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to perform tasks requiring manual dexterity.

Qualifications

  • Completion of the SDTI Roadway Worker Certification Course and annual recertification sessions.
  • General qualifications include a high school diploma or equivalent, and a valid driver's license.

Skills

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and multitasking abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Basic computer skills.
