Construction Manager (Mechanical)

We partner with organizations delivering mission-critical infrastructure where safety, reliability, and regulatory compliance are essential. This role supports a Hospital Recovery and Renovation project with the Department of Veterans Affairs in Montgomery, AL, reporting to the Program Director and collaborating with VA client staff to support construction activities, generate reports, and serve as a client-side representative.

The Mechanical Construction Manager will provide leadership, mentorship, and project/construction management for new ground-up construction. The role involves decisive direction regarding business, technical, and personnel management across multi-disciplinary activities. You will lead a team of professionals and act as an advisor/liaison to the client (user groups, design team, contractors, and facility engineering representatives). The project may require off-hour work during construction to minimize impact on medical center operations.

Responsibilities

• Conduct daily inspections of site work and building construction; document discrepancies, code violations, improper materials or techniques, and substandard workmanship. Monitor schedules to identify and mitigate project slippage and coordinate project phasing.
• Review Contractor’s submittals for technical compliance with contract requirements, RFIs, and make recommendations for acceptance, required changes, or rejection.
• Maintain accurate, complete, and well-organized project records, including submittals, RFIs, pay applications, inspection/testing records, correspondence, changes, warranties, certified payrolls, project photographs, samples, and safety observations.
• Inspect and verify the accuracy and completeness of the contractor’s as-builts.
• Conduct and/or attend weekly project meetings to monitor project status, schedule, discuss problems, and resolve issues.
• Review testing/inspection reports submitted by the Contractor and provide approval/disapproval recommendations to the SRE/RE.
• Keep thorough records of all construction-related matters to assist VA in conflict resolution.
• Review Contractor-proposed utility services and/or traffic interruption plans and provide reports to SRE/RE.
• Maintain an inventory of materials, supplies, and equipment; monitor quantities used in contract administration.
• Assist in documenting the administration of construction contract changes (draft proposal requests, prepare cost estimates, review cost proposals, assist VA in negotiations, prepare change order packages for the Contracting Officer).
• Perform daily/weekly safety inspections and prepare safety inspection reports as part of the daily log. Monitor contractor safety management and verify compliance with project-specific safety plans, Cal-OSHA, and VA requirements.
• Maintain lists of observed defects and omissions. Prepare inspection punch lists and coordinate resolutions of punch list items.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.
• 6 years of design and construction experience.
• Experience reviewing design and construction plans against existing site conditions.
• Experience resolving unforeseen site and design conditions/problems and proposing cost-effective technical solutions.
• Experience conducting inspections and inventories of structures to identify deficiencies, problems, or general physical condition.
• Knowledge of all aspects of commercial mechanical construction, including underground mechanical installation, medical gas systems, domestic water systems, chilled water systems, and steam systems.
• Knowledge of low Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems, testing and balancing, operations, sheet metal duct systems, and control systems including direct digital controls.
• Knowledge of conveying systems including electric dumbwaiters, materials lifts, electric traction elevators, hydraulic elevators, pneumatic tube systems, and uniform dispensing equipment.
• Preferred: Knowledge of mechanical design and installation for specialized medical and laboratory equipment (e.g., MRI, PET, CT, audiometric booths, fume hoods, biological safety cabinets, sterilization equipment).
• Ability to provide cost estimates and take-offs for structural contract modifications.
• Ability to determine compliance of workmanship, materials, equipment, and installed work with contract requirements and industry standards.
• Working knowledge and understanding of building, safety, and environmental codes.
• Working knowledge of environmental, civil, safety, architectural, and structural fields.

Pay

$105,000 – $125,000 USD per year (Montgomery, AL).
