Construction Management Inspector (Asst. CE)

About the role

Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) is seeking a Construction Management Inspector (Assistant Civil Engineer) to oversee the quality and compliance of critical capital improvement projects, including drinking water, drainage, and wastewater systems. This role involves collaborating with industry experts, ensuring projects are built safely, efficiently, and to the highest standards, and working alongside engineers, contractors, inspectors, and community partners.

Responsibilities

• Develop a thorough understanding of project plans, specifications, special provisions, and permits
• Provide quality assurance over contractor’s work
• Document contractor’s work with a Daily Inspection Report (DIR) and appropriate photos
• Verify that permitted equipment and supplies have been installed and tested, and that all contract documents and permits have been met
• Coordinate efforts with the supervisor, resident engineer (RE), permit-related inspectors, technical testing services, and specialty consultants
• Assist REs to ensure contractor compliance with the project plans and specifications and all permit conditions
• Avoid creating an equitable workplace culture in which every employee is valued, supported, and respected

Qualifications

• Education: Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering or Civil Engineering Technology; or other combinations of education and/or experience which provide preparation to do professional civil engineering work
• Four (4) years of Construction Management experience
• Current Washington State driver license to operate city vehicles to visit construction sites

Additional Information

• Work Environment/Physical Demands: Most work is performed at construction sites. Field assignments may entail exposure to all types of weather, traffic, hazardous/toxic substances, and work in or near construction sites. Must be able to lift over 50 pounds, stand, walk, or bend for extended periods of time, and work nights, evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.
• Workplace Schedule/Environment: This position will be required to work in the office and on construction sites five (5) days per week, individual schedules will be agreed upon by the employee and their supervisor. Work is performed both in an office environment and in a public setting. Collaborative, inclusive team environment.
