About the role

Groundhand is the entry-level position in the Construction Department. This role starts as entry-level, and within a few years, you can build the foundation for a career as an Installer, Splicer, Engineer, and more. The position typically works four ten-hour shifts but may vary. You will be on call periodically and may travel out of town for jobs. The role involves heavy lifting and physical labor as part of a four-person team to install poles, strand, fiber, or conduit to help build the network.

Responsibilities

• Perform all assigned duties
• Obtain a Class A CDL within 90 days of hire (if not already held)
• Obtain a flagging certificate within 90 days of hire (if not already held)
• Perform heavy manual labor, including lifting up to 70 lbs on occasion
• Work as a member of a team
• Obtain a CPR card within 90 days of hire (if not already held)
• Use independent judgment and think ahead
• Relocate to within 35 minutes of the corporate office
• Work in confined spaces such as crawlspaces and attics by crawling, bending, reaching, and twisting
• Report to the crew lead/operator/foreman
• Collaborate with other crews

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Excellent physical condition
• Ability to work flexible hours, overtime, and take 24-hour on-call duty on a rotating basis, including nights, weekends, and holidays
• Ability to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions, day or night, including travel
• Ability to obtain a medical exam certificate
• Hand and finger dexterity to carry and use tools and equipment
• Ability to stand 80–90% of the time
• Close vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus; ability to differentiate between wire sizes and colors
• Pass a pre-employment drug screen
• Class A CDL or permit preferable; ability to obtain a Class A permit within 90 days of hire required
• Flagging card preferable; training provided within 90 days if necessary
• Ability to tolerate extreme temperature changes, dust, pollen, wind, snow, and rain
• Ability to work in confined areas such as underground vaults and manholes for extended periods

Pay

$20/hour (DOE) with zero-cost health benefits for employees.

Schedule

• Typically four ten-hour shifts per week
• On-call duty periodically
