Construction Laborer

APAC-Kansas, Inc., Shears Construction, is a multi-million dollar heavy highway contractor established in 1874. We operate multiple asphalt plants, ready mix plants, rock quarries, and sand operations in Kansas. Our work includes public, private, and commercial projects such as paving, utility, dirt-grading, and concrete flat work. We prioritize safety and quality in a competitive market.

About the Role

As a Construction Laborer, you’ll play a vital role in a wide range of construction and paving projects. This role offers opportunities to learn, grow, and contribute across various tasks while adapting to the dynamic needs of job sites. The career path includes roles such as General Laborer and Paving Laborer, providing room for advancement and skill development.

Responsibilities

• Champion a safe work environment by rigorously following all safety policies, procedures, and protocols—your safety and that of your team is our top priority.
• Follow all company, OSHA, and MSHA regulations for safe and compliant job execution, and promptly report any issues to leadership or safety personnel.
• Support construction and paving crews with hands-on tasks such as shoveling, raking, operating a wheelbarrow, and directing trucks for safe and precise operations.
• Communicate with equipment operators to ensure seamless movement and alignment of materials using hand signals and tools.
• Execute daily tasks as directed by your Foreman, adapting quickly to the ever-changing demands of the project.
• Operate small power tools (e.g., jackhammers) as needed, improving your technical skill set on the job.
• Dig, spread, and level construction materials for optimal project results.
• Move and handle materials, tools, and supplies with care and efficiency.
• Install, relocate, and remove traffic control devices such as signs, barricades, and cones to keep work zones safe.
• Maintain consistent and reliable attendance—your presence makes a difference.
• Take on additional responsibilities as assigned—no two days are ever the same.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED preferred.
• Previous experience in construction is a plus but not required—your attitude and work ethic matter most.
• At least 18 years of age.
• Ability to pass a pre-employment physical, drug screening, and background check.
• Commitment to following all safety requirements, procedures, and wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) as needed.
• Flexibility to travel, work nights, weekends, and outside of your local area when the job requires it.
• Knowledge of construction materials, methods, and tools is helpful; willingness to learn is essential.
• Ability to read, write, and perform basic math.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Physical & Work Environment Requirements

• Frequently required to climb, balance, and perform tasks involving physical agility.
• Regularly sit, climb, and use hand signals or equipment; occasionally stand, walk, crawl, kneel, bend, stoop, crouch, or reach above shoulder height.
• Lift and move objects weighing up to 25-50 lbs as needed.
• Work primarily outdoors, often in extreme weather and environmental conditions.
• Comfortable working in all weather conditions; exposed to jobsite hazards such as moving machinery, high places, airborne particles, and loud environments.
• Must have specific vision abilities, including close, distance, color, peripheral, and depth perception, to operate equipment safely.

Pay

Competitive pay, starting at $18/hr. dependent on experience. Sign-on bonus available.
