About the role

Groundhand is the entry-level position in the Construction Department. The employee will typically work four ten-hour shifts, though this can change. The position may also require periodic on-call duty and out-of-town travel for jobs. The groundhand will perform heavy lifting and physical labor as part of a four-person team to install poles, strand, fiber, or conduit to help build the network.

Responsibilities

  • Perform all assigned duties
  • Obtain a Class A CDL within 90 days of hire date (required if not already held)
  • Obtain a flagging certificate within 90 days of hire date (required if not already held)
  • Perform heavy manual labor, including lifting up to 70 lbs on occasion
  • Work as a member of a team
  • Obtain a CPR card within 90 days of hire date (required if not already held)
  • Use independent judgment and think ahead
  • Relocate to within 35 minutes of the corporate office
  • Work in confined spaces such as crawlspaces and attics by crawling, bending, reaching, and twisting
  • Report to the crew lead/operator/foreman
  • Collaborate with other crews

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Excellent physical condition
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, overtime, and take 24-hour on-call duty on a rotating basis, including nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Ability to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions, day or night, including travel
  • Ability to obtain a medical exam certificate
  • Hand and finger dexterity to carry and use tools and equipment
  • Ability to stand 80–90% of the time
  • Vision: close vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus; ability to differentiate between wire sizes and colors
  • Pass a pre-employment drug screen
  • Class A CDL or permit (preferable); ability to obtain a Class A permit within 90 days of hire (required)
  • Flagging card (preferable); ability to obtain one within 90 days of hire (required if not already held)
  • Tolerate temperature changes, dust, pollen, wind, snow, and rain
  • Work in confined areas such as underground vaults and manholes for extended periods

Pay

$20 per hour (DOE) with zero-cost health benefits for employees.

Schedule

  • Typically four ten-hour shifts per week (may vary)
  • Periodic on-call duty
  • Occasional out-of-town travel for jobs
